This week brought us big news from the drifting scene, with Nissan->ke62 setting a new world record for the fastest drift with a customized, 1,380-horsepower GT-R.->ke1592 While this benchmark will probably stand unchallenged for a few years and no other news from the sport will appear as exciting, Ford'->ke31s brand-new Mustang RTR comes pretty close.

Specifically developed for drifting star Vaughn Gittin Jr., the 2016 Mustang RTR is lighter than ever at only 2,800 pounds, and its V-8 powerplant was tweaked to generate a whooping 900 horsepower. Completed just in time for the 2016 Formula Drift season, the new Monster Energy Nitto Tire Mustang RTR was recently put through its paces by America's number one drifter in terms of trophies won on the race track. Fortunately, the RTR's maiden test was documented on video and Ford Performance has just released a short teaser showing Gittin Jr. driving sideways.

The screaming you'll be hearing in the footage comes from a 7.1-liter V-8 built by Ford Performance and Roush Yates. The naturally aspirated mill revs to 9,000 rpm and is powerful enough to send Gittin Jr. from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds. The new RTR will make its competition debut in April at the first round of the Formula Drift Championship in Long Beach, California. As always, a road-spec Mustang RTR will be sold at select Ford dealers in the U.S. and, for the first time, in Europe as well. Hit the play button for the drifting madness.
