The automotive journal Motor Trend has conducted their first ever “Best Drivers Car Competition” and we have the video to show it to you. When the crack staff at the California based car magazine talk about looking for the best driver’s car, they are not talking about quantitative statistics that can be measured, such as horsepower and 0 to 60 MPH times, but about how an automobile handles itself over hundreds of miles of twisty canyon roads as well as on a world class racetrack. As far as the editors at Motor Trend are concerned, this test is all about being able to go fast and have fun doing it.

So they assembled 10 of the world’s top sports cars from around the world including the: Audi R8, BMW 135, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1, Ford Shelby GT500, Jaguar XFR, Mazda Miata, Nismo 370Z and the Porsche Cayman S. The Motor Trend staff drove these cars all over the state of California and then handed the keys over to professional racing driver Randy Pobst for his own unique brand of commentary after ringing out all ten of these high performance machines around the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

After some controversial words from Mr. Pobst in which he proclaimed the Cayman S to be better than any 911 that came before, apart from the purest of the pure GT3 RS models, the team of automotive journalists awarded the 320 HP mid engine 3.4 Liter flat six Porsche with its wonderful PDK cog swapper as the best all around driver’s car for 2009.

You forget M6, Motor Trend has to keep the Domestic fanboys happy by bringing in the American iron. The only domestic that deserved a drivers car spot was the CTS-V. In place of the other junk, MT could have used the RX8, S2000, GT-R, GT3, IS-F, EVO X or M3.

In just about every review I have read of the ZR1, it has been described as scary. How did it even get put in the comparison?

Of course the Camaro’s in there; Motor Trend always sides with GM vehicles for no apparent reason, as does Car and Driver with BMW. That’s why I like Road and Track.

I still call it automotive BS. This is about a drivers car, meaning confidence inspiring should be the most important. Ride quality? Why even go with the Nismo Z when its a well known fact that the standard Z has excellent ride characterstics, superb braking and supercar levels of grip. And where is the ultimate drivers car? The M3? Wheres the confidence inspiring GT-R? Where the super confident RX-8?

And the Camaro SS as a drivers car? was Motor Trend trying to get in the good graces of the Transformer crowd?

Yeah, because the Nismo Z and R8 are such great daily commuters, too.

I would not be so hateful about their work, but talking about the video, it started great, topgear style with fancy slow motion and style, but after that it turned out as a cold analysis of the cars. they need to bring a little more scripting in their show and more passion than pure commentary.
I think their car selection is pretty good for everyday sportscars. Aston Martin and viper are not car you would want to drive every day so...
Also keep in mind those guys live in California. For me in Florida where roads are plain flat and straight, the Ford GT500 would be the favorite. The best car is only the best to its driver based on its abilities and daily driving needs.

just my 2 cents smiley

I’d own an STI over any of these save maybe the R8.

Best drivers cars? And they put in the Camaro, the GT500 and the ZR1? Do the idiots know what a drivers car means? Just because its a Porche doesn’t automatically make the Cayman S a drivers car. Morons.
