Four-time Grand Am champion and Speed Channel host, Tommy Kendall, returns for the fifth episode of Mercedes USA’s AMG Driving Academy Performance Series. After detailing a number of important techniques in the past four episodes - AMG Driving Academy instructor, Don Harple, helped out in episode 4 - Kendall now turns his attention to teaching us the importance of the racing line and how to maximize your lap by using it as often as you can.

Being adept in using the ’line technique’ goes a long way in becoming a great driver. As Kendall says, "there’s an infinite number of lines in a race track, but there’s only one that’s fastest".

Taking this to heart, finding the track’s racing line not only minimizes the number of times you turn the wheel - the more you turn, the slower you become - but also allows you to hit corners quickly and exit without losing any speed. The key, according to Kendall, is to use every inch of the track at your disposal. You start out wide as you enter the corner and turn inside all the way to the apex, or the clipping point before drifting to the exit point.

The most important thing in line technique is to think a couple of moves ahead and see where all three sections of a corner are before you hit them. That way, you can carefully gauge your move before you actually do it, saving you precious time and speed in the process.

I just have a question that popped up in my mind. I was thinking if this line technique is applicable also to smokey burnout, or it will discuss in the next episode?

Tommy Kendall shows the easiest way to do the line technique while maintaining your speed. These instructions are simple to follow although it really needs a lot of patience to perfect this one.

The effects used in this video really suits the car featured here. The speed of the car is like a light speed. Tommy Kendall is really a great driver and I guess he’s right. Being a good driver is not just about skills and in mind but must also be at heart.

I really love this show for I learned a lot in every episodes! The AMG Driving Academy Performance Series really differ from the car show that we see on TV. Learning the line technique is kind of difficult especially when it involves the corner. As a racer, you need a good car in order to run smoothly in the edgy part of the race track.

Most probably the line technique is not applicable on muscle car!hehe On the serious side, I fully understand on how Tommy Kendall teach this technique. It’s just easy as one-two-three. Putting a cones in the track as the mark for the turn in, apex and exit are quite smart. I agree it needs a lot of patience in order to learn this one.

I never been drive my car in typical race track. Entering the corner is kind of difficult and I guess it would be harder if you didn’t memorize the course of the track. Well, I mean for a starter like me, I might missed the three section after I came a little closer. This one needs a lot of patience in order to master.

Wow!A free tutorial from the race car driver Tommy Kendall! For a newbie like me, the line technique is kind of difficult. I think I need a couple of extensive practice in order to master this technique. Well, I guess before anything else identifying the turn in, apex and exit would be the my first goal.
