Have you ever heard of anti-lag? The turbocharged racing technology pioneered by Ferrari in the 1980's to keep the boost up in the Formula 1 car, and later on in World Rally competition where it is still used today. Basically in order to keep the turbo spinning right where the engineers want it to be, when the driver lifts his or her foot of the accelerator the ignition is severely retarded and the fuel mixture becomes much richer. What this does is allow the unburnt air/fuel to reach the glowing exhaust manifold and explode right next to the turbocharger, keeping it at full boost. The result is incredible performance and a lot of noise.
