Video: Audi R18 opens testing at Sebring ahead of debut at Spa-Francorchamps

While all eyes were at Sebring last weekend for the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race to mark the opening of the 2011 ALMS season, German automaker, Audi, went largely unnoticed as it completed a couple of testing runs for its new LMP1 racer, the R18.

The R18’s debut is still a month away at the 6-hour Spa-Francorchamps endurance race on May 7, 2011, but with precious time remaining before its debut, the engineers over at Audi worked double hard last weekend to ensure that the car’s aerodynamics and reliability were up to par with its predecessor, the R15.

Fortunately, Audi was kind of enough to post a couple of videos of the Sebring testing, complete with action shots of their LMP1 racer run roughshod on the race track. On top of the two-minute R18 action-fest, there’s also another video featuring no less than Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, the brand’s motorsport head, giving us the low-down behind the car, including the decision to go for an all-new 3.7-liter V6 diesel engine with the R18.

Check out the video of Dr. Ullrich’s interview after the jump.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More

Yeah, I have to agree on that one. The styling is not that impressive. Its a good thing that Audi R18 have an amazing speed.

For a racing car, the styling is not that important for the performance is the only thing that matter! Its a good thing as well that it offer a better fuel economy vehicle.

I don’t want to speculate since the full press release of the car details wasn’t come out. I want to read the performance of this car.

Aesthetically, the racing car looks great! However, while watching the video I could say that this car has a difficulty in the corner. Its fast in the straight line but not in the corners.

Well, we definitely ought to give a round of applause to Audi’s engineering team for the great work that they have done on the car. They really did push its limits

Yeah, I was really impressed too. Imagine that, I never thought that the car would be able to sprint that fast. They certainly did a great work on this one.

Wow! How thoughtful for the part of the Audi! Admittedly, the video makes leaves my jaw dropped. I was impressed with the performance of the R18.

It is not really that surprising that the R18 would perform this well, considering the work that they have done on it. Hope it succeeds in the race.

Yeah, the R18 is really looking good on this one, just a few more tweaks and it would be ready for the race. I would definitely be looking forward to this.

Nice, they really are doing a lot of work on the R18. I hope they would tweak it more in order for it to be ready for the races, since it is one of the top favorites.

Hmm, the car is definitely performing rather well in these tests. This really goes to show how ready Audi is for the race in Spa-Francorchamps.

The model looks more dynamic and masculine. When it debuts in May, it sure to give a tough competition and meets the endurance limits.
