Host Fred Williams of Motor Trend’s Dirt Every Day has been working on his Alabama Army Truck project for quite a while. Followers of the show will recall the truck’s transformation from a worn-out surplus CUCV truck to a customized off-road beast thanks to an extreme engine swap. DED pulled out the tired, 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 diesel and threw in a supercharged, 6.2-liter LSA V-8, the same 550-plus horsepower mill found in the second-gen Cadillac CTS-V and current Camaro ZL1.

Williams and the crew now work to upgrade the braking system to handle the extra power and a new set of 40-inch tires. The brakes come courtesy of an aftermarket performance company and are designed against corrosion and heat build up. The rear brakes going on the Army Truck are actually meant to be performance front brakes on a GM three-quarter ton truck. Needless to say, this Chevy->ke199 should be able to stop on a dime.

Then come the wheels and tires. Williams chose a set of Pro Comp Xtreme Terrain MT2 tires sized at 40-inches and mounted on matte black, 17-inch, Pro Comp wheels. The combo not only looks great, but will also perform well on the trail.

Of course by turning such massive rubber, the driveline must be upgraded. New driveshafts, yokes, and U-joints connect everything while an upgraded 4L80-E transmission does the gear changes and an Atlas transfer case sends power to the front solid axle.

All told, it’s a great episode of Dirt Every Day, so click, sit back, and enjoy.
