Video: Jay Leno meets the ’hero car’ of Fast Five

Fast Five, the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, opened last weekend to some pretty impressive grossing figures, around $83.6 million worth of box office sales, making it the highest grossing opening weekend film for the year.

The hype and attention surrounding the movie has apparently rubbed off on some people, including one comedian who is considered one of the foremost gearheads in the world. In the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay Leno invited movie car builder, Dennis McCarthy, to his garage to talk about one of the main cars that appeared in the movie: a replica of the C2 Corvette Grand Sport that McCarthy’s company built exclusively for the movie.

Featuring a suspension taken from the Corvette of the 80’s, McCarthy and his people went about the work of adding some touches to make it as real as possible. The custom body was given by Mongoose Motorsport and the car, despite it’s designation as a ’movie’ car, still has a powerful enough engine to produce 500 horsepower. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then we highly suggest that you head over to your local AMC Theater to watch it.

In addition to the C2 Corvette Grand Sport, McCarthy also brought another one of the movie franchise’s iconic cars, the Dodge Charger R/T. This is the same car that was used by Vin Diesel in the fourth installment of the franchise, and comes with a faux blower on it.

Check out the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage featuring McCarthy and the hero car of Fast Five. As an added bonus, the cameras even went back with McCarthy to his shop around the block to check out some other cars from the Fast & Furious franchise.

Kirby’s first exposure into the world of automobiles happened when he caught Knight Rider on television as a five-year old boy. David Hasselhoff didn’t leave much of an impression on him (that happened later on in Baywatch), but KITT certainly did. To this day, Kirby remains convinced that he will one day own a car with the same ‘spirit’ as the original KITT (not the 2008 monstrosity). He doesn't know when that will be, but until then, he’s committed to expressing his love for KITT, and all cars for that matter, here at TopSpeed.  Read More

Now I am curious with Jay Leno’s garage! I’ve seen the film of Fast and Furious so I know how fast and how good the performance of this car is. Jay Leno is a good host and I will always depend on the honesty of his reviews, specially on cars.

Awesome car! I don’t need to read the article because all the know the movie of fast five and this car has a great performance and it’s so fast.

Agreed. With the awesome performance of this car now wonder why its called the hero car. However, its still makes me wonder if it performs the same in real life?

I first read about this car here before I have watched the video and I have to say that I was impressed with the major appearance of this car and it truly saves the life of the main characters from the death defying scene.

I have watched the movie and after its scene in the explosion of the train its just dumped out in the lake of water. Well, I guess its the reason why its a replica version.

Honestly, I really doubt the performance of this car during the filming of the movie. I wonder if it performs the same in real life. For a vintage car to have an impressive power output like this, well, its awesome!

I’ve remembed that he did guested the stars from this movie. But the most important detail on his show is to feature the real superstars on this movie – the super hot cars that has been used during the filming.

Those cars were really awesome. I think they should be given more credits instead of the stars. However, the stars did also their best. I love the action scenes in this movie.

I kept on browsing Jay Leno’s thread on this site. And I must commend the great effort made of the people here. All videos were so detailed and updated. Keep it up TopSpeed guys!

I though he interviewed the stars, what he meant was the ’hot super cars’ featured in this flick. Actually, I have seen the movie and I should able to ask Jay Leno to feature more of the cars used in this movie.

Does Jay Leno features the Dodge Charger on his show? Well, for me I find that car quite interesting and its the only car that leave mark on me. I really love on how Dom drive this car during the last part of the first film.

Yeah, same here. When I saw the trailer of this movie, it really caught my attention since then I waited for the final released! And I have to agree that the storyline is not that interesting at all but the car scene was so awesome!

I think all the people around the world have wait for the released of this movie! Imagine it earned a $83M in its opening day! Though I have to admit that this car has not interesting storyline..only the cars here got me interested!

Obviously, Jay Leno’s priority is to check out on the cars used in the movie, Fast Five. You can clearly see on this clip how he was excited interviewing the car builder and made it one of the exclusive cars that has been made today.

Eddie Long, maybe you’re just jealous because Jay Leno can do whatever he wanted and ride all the cars he loves. I’m just an ordinary geek student and I don’t have much time to watch his show. I only browse this site to check out what’s the latest car he featured.

  (433) posted on 05.3.2011

Know what? I am really starting to hate jay Leno now. Why does he always get the chance to go up close with those rides. Oh well, maybe I should try as well.

  (334) posted on 05.3.2011

Heck! I have a trouble in watching the video, it continuously buffering. Anyways, i like it because it gives me a chance to know the capabilities of this car up close!

It seems that the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious movie is quite successful. And the thing that makes it popular are the cars. BTW, I just wonder that if those car runs fast just like what it did in the movie.
