The potential EVs have for the developing automotive industry is hard to overstate. With the environmental benefits and the simplicity of ownership and maintenance, industrial powerhouses are beginning to plunge headfirst into the EV market.

We first saw the company VinFast a few years back when they released some BMW-based luxury cars exclusively for the Vietnamese market. Now, they are back and looking to expand around the globe.

Who is VinFast, and what are they bringing to the party?

VinFast has had a relatively short life in the auto industry. They built their first factory in 2017 on Cat Hai Island, Vietnam. In 2019, they dropped the BMW-based Lux A2.0, Lux SA2.0, and three electric scooters exclusively for Vietnam. In 2020 those vehicles were the best selling models in their respective segments, and earlier in 2021, they began producing an electric city bus, also only for Vietnam.

On November 17, 2021, they released the good-looking VF e35 and the VF e36 electric SUVs at the Las Angeles auto show that were designed by Pininfarina.

What can we expect from the new kids on the block?

Specifications of any kind have not really been confirmed, but there have been reports that suggest some general stats about the e35. Those stats are a base battery capacity of about 90 kWh sending juice to a single motor setup with about 200 horsepower or, a double motor configuration that might nudge 400 horsepower. We can also expect it to travel about 300 miles on a charge. And for the interior to also be fairly well made with some upper-scale materials with two-row seating.

It is also reported that the larger e36 to have three-row seating and to have similar power as the top of the range e35, if not the same motor setup altogether, albeit with a slightly larger battery. Perhaps about 100 kWh giving probably closer to 400 miles of range and, of course, costing a bit more than the e35.

We would like to point out this is also based on what we know about the EV market right now and the specs for the competitors of the e35 and e36.

Both the e35 and e36 are reported to have a smorgasbord of safety and semi-autonomous features like lane keep assist, collision warning, automatic parking, and some sort of adaptive cruise control.

Unfortunately, we do not know how much either will cost. The e35 will compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-e, Tesla Model Y, and Volkswagen ID.4 and will probably cost around $45,000-$50,000. The e36 will be a closer rival to the Tesla Model X and will more than likely cost about $75,000-$80,000.
