In the age of social media, even teasers are getting teasers

The Fast and Furious franchise is arguably one of the biggest movie properties in the world today. It’s so big that any production news worth its salt can explode into a global story of epic proportions, just like what happened with the rumored feud between its two leading men, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Save those talks for another day though because the big news today is Vin Diesel announcing the official release date of Fast 8’s trailer.

According to post on Diesel’s official Facebook account, the trailer is set to debut on December 11. The trailer is expected to first debut online before being shown in cinemas, which typically happen a few days after. It’s not a coincidence that this date was chosen, largely because the trailer drops five days before the movie release of this year’s most hotly-anticipated movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Granted, most people would’ve probably watched the Fast 8 trailer by the time they go see Rogue One, but there’s still the extra elements of chills and goosebumps in seeing in the big screen for the first time.

Expectations are especially high for Fast 8 in light of the rumored feud between Diesel and Johnson and Diesel, for his part, was savvy enough to indirectly fan the flames of the supposed rivalry when he included this cryptic message in his post: “You will see why there was tension, you will understand the intensity.”

Needless to say, Diesel is flexing his social media prowess and it’s working. December 11 has now turned into #Fast8TrailerDay and like most fans of the franchise, I can’t wait to see it.

Will the trailer put the spotlight on the simmering rivalry between Diesel and Johnson?

The colossus that is the Fast and Furious movie franchise has gotten so big that it probably doesn’t need Diesel to promote the release of the trailer. It might even be better if the trailer dropped unexpectedly similar to how Johnson’s Instagram post about “candy asses” on set caused a worldwide maelstrom of controversy. There’s a reason why they’re called bombshells and the trailer releasing when nobody expects it to could have the same effect.

That said, I don’t mind knowing the trailer’s release date. That at least gives me something to look forward to and as a fan of the Diesel/Johnson feud, I’m especially excited to see how these two come together in the movie trailer. Maybe it explains the root of the issue between the two A-listers, or maybe it doesn’t. Either way, the anticipation should give fans of the movie franchise something to talk about in the two months leading up to the trailer’s arrival.
