Volkswagen announced in an interview with Automobilwoche, that the first generation of its New Small Family will be unveiled in September 2010.

The rear-wheel-drive, entry-level model is viewed within Volkswagen as the company’s most important project since the Golf replaced the Beetle. The company estimates that 100,000 cars a year will be sold in western Europe as Volkswagens, and another 100,000 as Seats and Skodas. Growth markets such as Russia and India will account for another 262,000 units a year, VW estimates.

The base price of the three-door model, which is about 3500mm long, has been increased to €8,950 from an original target of just under €8,000. Volkswagen plans to price the five-door version, with a wheelbase about 80mm longer, at a minimum of €9,450.
