Volkswagen has a new product it wants to sell. It’s not a car. It’s not a clothing line. It’s a line of iPhone 8 phone cases, each with a story to tell. The cases, called “crashed cases,” are made from the sheet metal of cars that were involved in texting-and-driving car crashes in Sweden. If for nothing else, they should serve as a reminder of what happens when drivers in Sweden don’t pay attention to the road.

The dangers of texting while driving is real. Take your eyes off the road to text and studies show that you’re 23 times more likely to get involved in a car crash. That increased probability is no laughing matter, and that’s exactly why Volkswagen Stockholm and brand management company NordDDB took it upon themselves to create the “crashed cases.”

On the surface, they look like ordinary phone cases, albeit ones with some damage to them. But those scratches on the sheet metal aren’t novelty aesthetics; they’re actual damage that happened to the cars they came from. Those dings and scratches are a result of car crashes.

“We know how easily it happens that you accidentally pick up your phone to receive a call or to send a text,” Johan Karlsson, Brand Manager at Volkswagen Stockholm, said. “But you are 23 times more likely to be in a car accident if you text and drive, so it’s important to know how serious the matter is.”

Only 153 cases will be made, each representing a serious accident that happened in Sweden during the first month the country banned using mobile phones in traffic. Even with the law in place, car crashes stemming from texting while driving still occurred at an alarming rate. Volkswagen Sweden hopes that having these crashes will serve as a reminder of the dangers that come with the continued use of mobile phones on the road. “We believe a phone case made by unfortunate cars makes you think twice before you pick up your phone,” Karlsson said. “It will be like a silent reminder to keep their focus on the road and not multitask while driving.”

The temptation to text while driving is real, especially if the conversations are serious. But doing so comes with the risk of not only endangering yourself but also those around you. That’s what these cases are for. Each one costs 599 Swedish Crowns or about $69 based on current exchange rates. You can buy them at crashedcases.com. All the proceeds from the sale of these crash cases will go to the Swedish organization Trafikskadefonden, which helps people who have been in traffic accidents.
