Show us the car already, volks!

Volkswagen has teased its latest entrant in the crowded crossover segment – the T-Cross– through a video and a few sketches. Out of the four core properties that the car signifies; namely Practical, Cool, Intuitive, and Safe, this was the first trailer depicting the ’cool’ aspect. The car is indeed the T-Roc’s younger brother; drawing lots of styling cues and probably technology too. But what does it take to succeed when the competition is so damn strong? Well, spoil the customers for choice.

Take Your Pick From Their Color Palette

The German automaker has made sure the car is not boring and customers don’t go looking elsewhere for that extra pizzazz. For starters, the T-Cross will be available in 12 different exterior shades!

The front looks very similar to the T-Roc, while the back is a little different, thanks to the full-width taillight.

What we feel makes this new kid on the block look butch is the set of wheels. They fill the wheel wells nicely, giving an illusion of it being bigger than it actually is. As for the interior, customers will be able to choose two-tone color schemes, further extending the level of customization. The cabin sketch looks like a straight lift from the 2018 Polo, which is not a bad thing. It’s also going to sound sweet, thanks to the new Beats sound system.

Our Take

Volkswagen Teases the New T-Cross

Volkswagen is playing it “cool” with the T-Cross, taking its own sweet time to launch the car. This segment is evolving at a brisk pace, so it works in the company’s favor to understand the customers’ needs and present them with a car that’ll resonate with them. The multitude of color options is a masterstroke already, so expect them to surprise us with similar options again.

Since Volkswagen is giving the Paris Motor Show a miss, the T-Cross will actually debut at a separate event in the spring next year.

It is expected to go on sale shortly thereafter. Do you think the T-Cross can beat the Honda HR-V, the Ford EcoSport, and the newly launched Mazda CX-3? Let us know in the comments section below.

Urban SUV: cool look and maximum customisation
Designers reveal how they developed the new T-Cross
Wolfsburg (D) – The countdown for the launch of the new T-Cross1 has begun. The world première of the most compact Volkswagen SUV ever will be celebrated in autumn. The slogan "I am more" will accompany the launch in spring 2019. It stands for the four property fields "I am practical", "I am cool", "I am intuitive" and "I am safe". With a trailer for "I am cool", Volkswagen is now showing how the T-Cross designers have surveyed the world again and developed a new, urban generation of the Sport Utility Vehicle.

Video: The new T-Cross

The T-Cross has a deliberately charismatic and masculine design. The front end, with its bonnet and headlights integrated outside the wide radiator grille, is a dominant design feature. At the side, a sharply cut character line divides the areas. It forms a powerful shoulder section and merges into a new design element.

At the rear: the horizontal reflector strip bordered by black trim.

Colour and trim example: two-colour dash pads link the fresh, sporty style of the interior and the 12 colours of the exterior. The new T-Cross will also be available in different bi-colour paintwork versions as an option when it is launched next year.

Interior example: at an early stage of development, the designers immersed themselves in the spacious interior virtually – using augmented reality. They tested the ergonomics as well as the ambience and experienced the T-Cross of tomorrow live in order to perfect it further. At the same time, they got a feeling for what it will be like for the first customers when the songs from their smartphone media library or streaming services resound through the interior of the new SUV via the "beats" sound system.
