Volvo is currently in the process of revamping its lineup, but once it’s done, it may cram a Coupe-SUV into its lineup. The new model would be unlike anything in Volvo’s current lineup and would take on models like the BMW X2 and Mercedes GLC Coupe. The news comes shortly after Volvo filed a trademark for the XC50 name, hinting that it could sit above the XC40 and below the XC60.

With Volvo currently revamping its lineup, and aiming to electrify every model in its lineup, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the BMW and Mercedes-fighting SUV-coupe won’t come to life right away. In fact, it isn’t even confirmed yet.

However, Les Kerssemakers, Volvo’s Senior Vice President in Europe, said, “we cover 98 percent of the segments, so it’s more likely we’ll go further into depths than expand.” When asked about if future plans included an SUV-Coupe, his reply gave some hope: “Potentially, but not in the short term.”

With that in mind, Volvo won’t be done with overhauling its lineup until 2019, meaning the earliest the XC50 would see light is 2020. But, with the potential being there, and the XC50 name already trademarked, it is a pretty strong possibility. At the very least, it’s a topic in the meeting room. For now, the brand will work on the S60 followed by the V40, a model that takes on the VW Golf, Mazda3, and Ford Focus.
