The handle of the vehicle's jack, which is stored near the battery, can be misplaced during maintenance under a bracket holding the battery in place, possibly leading to a short circuit and fire. Volvo said it will ensure the handle is properly stowed and add a warning label at no charge for owners.

Dan Johnston, a spokesman for Volvo in Rockleigh, New Jersey, declined to say what the recall would cost Ford. He said the automaker is now sending letters to owners in the U.S. and Canada.
