The GMC Hummer EV is now available for order with the first batch of the EV truck being available since fall 2021 and the SUV version being available in the first half of 2023. With that said, GM is still experiencing chip shortage and other supply issues, meaning that you may have to wait a while if you have placed an order for the electric pick-up truck. You probably weren’t expecting the amount you have to wait to be as long as it is.

At the time of writing this, there have been 77,000 orders for the Hummer EV, with the waiting list steadily growing. With that said, GM Factory Zero in Detroit, which employs around 700 people, manages to churn out only 12 Hummer EVs per day. To put things into perspective, Ford’s factory in Dearborn, Michigan produces 150 units of the Ford F-150 Lightning per day.

While both companies face similar challenges, Ford decided to go the easier route and simply adapt the existing Ford F-150 platform for the F-150 Lightning. GM decided to develop a completely new platform, which combined with the introduction of multiple EV models among which the new Chevrolet Silverado EV, which arrives in Spring 2023, led to additional delays in production.

But just how long do you need to wait for your Hummer EV? According to the Wall Street Journal, it is calculated that some of the 77,000 customers who have ordered the all-electric truck may have to wait as much as 17 years to get their hands on the GMC Hummer EV. To put things in perspective, in some countries from the former Soviet bloc, people had to wait over 10 years for what was, essentially, a rebadged Fiat 124 made of cheaper materials, which is still less than what buyers of the Hummer EV may have to wait.

Even start-up manufacturers like Rivian are ahead of the GMC Hummer EV in terms of production figures. Rivian reports 2,553 of the R1 series (R1T and R1S) in the first quarter of 2022, which comes up to roughly 35 cars per day. GM officials promise that production will be stepped up in the second half of 2022. By that time, GM will start producing its batteries in-house, in a new factory in Ohayo, thanks to a joint partnership with LG Energy Solutions. This will make the automaker less dependent on external suppliers, which will, hopefully, increase production output enough by the time the SUV version of the Hummer EV goes on sale.
