This is exciting because both of them churn out the exact same power figures!

Compact luxury SUVs are quite in demand these days. They are not too big in size, making urban commuting easy and they don’t cost an arm and a leg - yet automakers earn a fat profit margin since they sell in high volume.

Not to mention, they come with powerful drivetrains as well! Here are two compact luxury SUVs going at each other’s throats with almost the exact same specs. This isn’t about two Germans, as it generally is. The folks at Cars.co.za pitted a BMW X4 M Competition against an Italian – the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Mamma Mia!

The Alfa Romeo Is A Lot Lighter Than The Bavarian

Let’s get the specs out first. The BMW X4 M Competition comes with a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder twin-turbo engine under the hood that makes 503 horses and 443 pound-feet of torque.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, on the other hand, is packed with a 2.9-liter, twin-turbo engine that also doles out the exact same power figures – 503 ponies and 443 pound-feet of twist.

Unsurprisingly, both engines are also mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The only difference that matters here is that the German comes with launch control, but the Italian doesn’t. However, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV is around 400 pounds lighter than the Bimmer. That sure as hell counts in a drag race when you want a quick start off the line, doesn’t it?

Since the Stelvio doesn’t have launch control, the driver shifted it into the manual mode and took off. The Stelvio started quicker off the line and sped away from the Bimmer and created enough distance. But the X4 caught up midway and then just kept sprinting forward while the Alfa Romeo was struggling to catch up with it. In the end, the BMW won by a very small margin. The X4 took 12.1 seconds to finish the quarter-mile, while the Stelvio took 12.14 seconds.

Do you think the result would have been any different if the Alfa Romeo was tuned to deliver more power in the high end of its torque band? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
