They’re both quick, but the BMW M5 CS sprints faster than the Audi RS7 at higher speedsby Sidd Dhimaan, on LISTEN 04:08
The Audi RS7 and the BMW M5 CS are both quick vehicles, but how they do fare against each other? Daniel Abt finds out the answer by pitting the two together in a drag race. While the Bimmer makes more horsepower, the Lord of the four rings produces a lot more torque. Both the Germans are powered by V-8s and feature an all-wheel-drive system. With similar specs, you’d expect them to have a close race. However, the M5 CS blows the RS7 out of the water. What do you think could be the reason for it – transmission, weight, tires, driver’s skill?
The BMW Is Much Lighter Than The Audi
Let’s get the specs out of the way first. The Audi RS7 is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 mill that produces 592 ponies and 590 pound-feet of twist. Power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The BMW M5 CS comes with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. It churns out 626 horses and 553 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system.
The major difference between the two is the weight. The RS7 weighs 4,718 pounds and is 529 pounds heavier than the 4,189-pounds M5 CS.
Not As Close A Race As You Would Expect
In the first drag race, the Audi RS7 got a much better start than the M5 CS which seemed to be hunting for traction. But, once all the tires got a good grip, there was no stopping it. It flew past the RS7 like it was a Dacia Sandero!
The BMW M5 CS took 3.99 seconds to 62 mph from a standstill and 6.66 seconds from 62 mph to 124 mph. It completed quarter-mile in 11.57 seconds and half-mile in 17.72 seconds while recording its top speed of 155.3 mph.
The Audi RS7 galloped to 62 mph from naught in 3.91 seconds. It took 8.94 seconds from 62-124 mph - 2.28 seconds slower than the BMW. It touched the quarter-mile mark in 11.77 seconds and half-mile in 18.42 seconds. It hit a top speed of 145.7 mph.
In the second run, the BMW didn’t waste time finding traction and this gave it a lead over the Audi from the moment the A-pedal was depressed. The M5 CS took just 3.24 seconds from 0-62 mph and 6.7 seconds from 62-124 mph. It recorded a top speed of 157.9 mph. Quarter-mile was completed in 10.93 seconds and half-mile in 17.07 seconds.
The RS7 was beaten comprehensively on all fronts.
The 0-62 mph sprint was completed in 3.56 seconds, and 62-124 mph in 8.41 seconds. It took 11.58 seconds to quarter-mile and 18.1 seconds to half-mile. It could get up to 148.1 mph at its peak.
Finally, there was the rolling race from around 38 mph, but the Audi couldn’t do anything here either. This race ensured a clean sweep for the BMW M5 CS that made short work of the RS7.
