• Watch As The Maserati MC20 Reaches For Its Top Speed On The Autobahn

It may not have Ferrari blood, but the new Maserati MC20 is still capable of great pace

The Maserati MC20 is the first mid-engine sports car from the Italian brand since the 2004 MC12. While the latter is, essentially, a re-bodied Ferrari Enzo, the new MC20 is developed completely in-house. The car’s biggest feat is the Nettuno engine, which is said to be designed, 100-percent, by Maserati. The car boasts some impressive figures, but it’s another thing, entirely, to see it in action. YouTube channel, AutoTopNL is happy to oblige as it takes the mid-engine Italian supercar for a spirited drive on the Autobahn, where it reaches impressive speeds.

How Fast is the Maserati MC20 Really?

Like its predecessor, the MC12, the MC20 is now offewrd as a Spyder under the name of Cielo. With that said, the MC20 is not seen as a true successor to the MC12, as it falls behind on the exclusivity and even performance front. The 6.0-liter Ferrari V-12 has made way for the all-new, 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6, which borrows F1 tech. The MC20 engine packs 630 horsepower (463 kilowatts) at 7,500 RPM and 538 pound-feet (730 Nm) at 3,000 to 5,500 RPM. With an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic sending power to the rear, Maserati says the MC20 will hit 60 mph (97 km/h) in 2.8 seconds, on to a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h).

While the MC20 is, arguably, not as special as its Ferrari Enzo-based predecessor, it is still capable of great pace. Of course, the advertised 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time is only achieved under a perfect launch and on the right surface. The best 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time achieved in the video took nearly a second longer than the official figures, due to wheel spin. The 100 to 200 km/h (62 to 124 mph) time was the more impressive figure as it was in the mid-six-second range, which is identical to a modified, 750-horsepower BMW X3M and better than a Mercedes AMG GTR Pro.

Needless to say, the Maserati MC20 is not a slow car and despite having to fill some big shoes, left by the MC12. It proved quicker than some serious performance machines, including some of Mercedes AMG and BMW M’s finest. But don’t take our word for it, as the video below is proof enough.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
