Gone are the days when drag racing was limited to supercars and hypercars. These days, watching trucks go berserk in a straight line is the trend. The guys at TFL Truck decided to bring four pickups to the race track – two Chevy Silverados with different V-8 engines, a GMC Sierra with a straight-six mill, and a Ram Rebel with a V-6. Instead of pitting all four workhorses against each other at the same time, the two V-8s battled first, and then the V-6s followed suit. The winners of both these races then went on to face each other and try to win the 'tournament'. Which truck do you think won?
How Do These Trucks Weigh Up Against Each Other?
Power is sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The other Chevy is the Silverado 1500 TrailBoss packing a 5.3-liter, V-8 gasoline mill that churns out 355 horses and 383 pound-feet of torque. This, too, is mated to the 10-speed automatic gearbox.
The final contender is the Ram Rebel with a 3.0-liter, V-6 EcoDiesel engine that produces 260 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the V-8s, these two are closely spec’d and will make for one hell of a close race.
The Mighty 6.2-liter For The Win
On paper, the bigger engine obviously seems like a clear winner, but it is much heavier than its counterpart. When the race started, the 6.2-liter V-8 Silverado absolutely smoked the smaller V-8. When the bigger engine truck touched the finish line, the 5.3-liter V-8 wasn’t even in the frame. Winner: Chevy Silverado 6.2-liter, V-8.
The GMC With Slightly Lower Figures Is Still Quicker
The next race seemed to be a lot more competitive and not as one-sided as the first one. The Ram Rebel also came with an air suspension that helped the truck lower its height. Although it looked like the Rebel would win by the nose, the exact opposite happened. The Ram Rebel was quicker off the line, but a sudden surge of power saw the Sierra AT4 zoom past it in a flash. Even the drivers were equally surprised by the result. Winner: GMC Sierra AT4 3.0-liter, Duramax.
No Replacement For Displacement
Now it was time for the straight-six Sierra AT4 to go up against its cousin, the Silverado with the 6.2-liter V-8. Even though one is a diesel engine and the other a gasoline mill, both of them produce the exact same amount of torque. The Sierra AT4 actually got a better launch and was quicker off the line, but it didn’t take long for the Silverado to overtake it and win the race by a huge margin. The Silverado registered a 0-60 mph time of 7.06 seconds.
Can The Ford Godzilla Beat Chevy’s Biggest Mill?
But it didn't end there. The guys brought a surprise entrant to challenge the winner of the tournament. This was a Ford F-250 Super Duty with the 7.3-liter V-8 gasoline engine that develops 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque}, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
With traction mode disabled on both the trucks, they took off well, but it was only a matter of time before the Silverado, yet again, destroyed its competitor. GM sure has got a gem of an engine here and this might be the fastest truck from Chevy’s stable today.
