The GV70 is Genesis’ first compact-luxury SUV, and it is a fantastic package overall. It is based on the G70 sedan, which means it has a sporty cred to it. And, Genesis being a luxury brand, you get all the bells and whistles as well. There are two engine options on offer, one being a four-pot turbo engine, and the other, a twin-turbo V-6.

Sam from Sam ‘CarLegion’ brought in a V-6 GV70 to take on a Tesla Model Y for a couple of drag races and a rolling race. The Model Y, being an EV, was going to be the winner for sure, but did the GV70 put up a good fight before going down? Let’s find out.

The GV70 And The Model Y Are Evenly Matched On Paper

An eight-speed automatic gearbox routes power to all four wheels. The GV70 tips the scales at 4,453 pounds.

All four wheels are powered here. It weighs 4,416 pounds, making it 37 pounds lighter than the Genesis.

Two Drag Races, One Roll Race, And A Clean Sweep For The EV

In the first race, the GV70 got a pretty good launch and took the lead off the line. But, as is with any EV, it didn’t take long for the Model Y to just fly past its rival. This, despite the GV70 driving in sports mode. They raced again, and this time, too, the Genesis got a fantastic start. It’s a different story that the Model Y edged it and won the race, but credit to Genesis for making the GV70 such a strong vehicle off the line. Keeping up with an EV isn’t easy, and beating them off the line, it’s a pretty big deal.

The final round was the rolling race from 31 mph (50 kph). The Genesis couldn’t much this time around. At kickdown, the Model Y left it in the dust to score a clean sweep over its internal combustion-engined rival.

The Model Y was expected to win, but it was nice to see the Genesis GV70 putting up a good fight before going down. If you were in the market for a new vehicle and had to pick any one of these, which one would it be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
