The Toyota Supra needs no introduction. The 20th-century model came with the famed 2JZ engine and was every kid’s dream car and some point back then. It was Brian’s drive in the Fast and Furious movies and was one of the reasons for its popularity amongst kids. In fact, that car fetched over half-a-million bucks at an auction recently.

The Supra Mk4 was brought to a drag strip by Carwow to take on the Celica GT-Four and the GR Yaris. The GR Yaris, with all the modern tech, beat the Celica and the Supra, but how did the latter two fare against each other?

It’s a Three-, Four-, and Six-Cylinder Battle

The Toyota Supra Mk4 comes with the iconic 3.0-liter, straight-six turbocharged ‘2JZ’ engine that makes 320 horses and 325 pound-feet of twist. Power is sent to the rear wheels exclusively via a four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Celica GT-Four features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that cranks 252 horses and 224 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system.

The GR Yaris is powered by a 1.6-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine. It churns out 261 horses and 266 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. This particular model is equipped with a Circuit Package, which adds front and rear limited-slip differentials.

The Supra weighs 3,285 pounds and is the heaviest of the lot. It is 220 pounds heavier than the 3,065-pound Celica GT-Four and 463 pounds heavier than the 2,822-pound GR Yaris. This is surprising because the Celica GT-Four and the GR Yaris feature an all-wheel-drive system whereas the Supra doesn’t!

The GR Yaris Left The Supra and The Celica In The Dust

In the drag race, the GR Yaris and the Celica GT-Four zoomed past the six-pot Supra, which struggled to sprint in a straight line for the initial few seconds. The Supra caught up with the Celica and left it behind, but couldn’t match up with the GR Yaris. The GR Yaris completed the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds, followed by the Supra in 13.8 seconds, and finally, the Celica GT-Four in 15 seconds.

The cars then took part in rolling races from 50 mph. The first race was exactly how the drag race turned out - The GR Yaris and the Celica got a good start, but the Supra made a comeback and overtook the Celica to secure second place. There was some confusion and as it turns out, they had started from 74 mph.

So, the race was conducted again with the cars starting at 50 mph this time. This had an effect on the result as the Supra managed to get a decent kickdown, although it was still the slowest of the lot. It didn’t take the Supra long to leave both, the Celica GT-Four and the GR Yaris behind to win the race.

The final round was a brake test from 70 mph. The GR Yaris took the shortest distance to stop whereas the Supra went slightly further. The Celica, on the other hand, just didn’t seem to stop and went a long way ahead of these two models.
