Sam from ‘Sam CarLegion’ drag raced a BMW X5 against a Range Rover Velar. The Velar is a lot more powerful, has a hybrid setup to assist it, and is lighter. But, does that automatically make it the winner? I’m afraid not
The Range Rover Velar P400 R-Dynamic comes with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six engine with a mild-hybrid setup. It puts out 395 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque
The BMW X5 xDrive 40i is powered by a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six engine that makes 335 ponies and 330 pound-feet of twist
Both the SUVs are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system
As for the weights, the Velar tips the scales at 4,435 pounds, making it roughly 430 pounds lighter than the 4,863-pound BMW X5
The first round was a standing drag race. Considering the Velar had everything going in its favor on paper, you’d expect it to win comfortably. But, it wasn’t meant to be. The X5 got a great launch and stayed ahead till the finish line
The second round was a roll race from 31 mph (50 kph). The German was quicker off the line yet again. The Velar started catching up towards the end, but it wasn’t enough to score a victory
They attempted the roll race again, but this time with manual shifts for the gearbox. Did it play in Velar’s favor? Nope, it didn’t. The X5 added another point to its tally to make it a clean sweep
The BMW had a great outing and took down a more powerful, lighter car in all the races they took part in. Swipe up to watch this surprisingly fun video
