While the 7.0-liter V-8 was rated for 430 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, in reality, these things were pushing way north of 500 ponies
This particular 69 example weighs 3200 lbs and has a 4-speed manual. It took on some other GM heavyweights to see what's what?
First up, a '70 Camaro Z28, 360 hp, and 392 lb-ft from its 350 Small block
The Camaro tips the scales at 3200 lbs, about 100 lbs heavier than the Vette
Which didn't play in its favor. The L88 did the standing 1/4 mile in 11.72 s@ 123mph, while the Camaro managed a 1/4 mile time of 13.48s at 102mph
Next up, this blue Chevelle 396SS from 1969
Under the hood, it features the optional L89, which meant an aluminum head. It was rated at 300 hp and 410 lb-ft from its 7.5-L V-8
But the L88 once again punched in a consistent 11.72s at 123 mph against the Chevelles 12.5s at 114mph. So that's round two to the L88 as well
Moving on to the heaviest car of the day, this 1972 Olds 442 W30, tips the scales at 3700 lbs
But with just 300hp and 410 lb-ft from its 7.5-L V-8, it gave the Vette a tough time but lost out by the time the two cars got to the line with a time of 12.09s at 115.47 mph
The final car of the day was yet another car from 1969
This Camaro ZL-1 produces an identical 430 hp and slightly more torque than the L88. It also weighs 100 pounds less than the Vette
However, owing to the poor RT from the driver in the ZL-1, the C3 Vette once again took the win with a sub-12 second 1/4 mile time
The fastest 1/4 mile pass that the L88 managed for the day was 11.57 seconds at 123 mph. It's no surprise that the C3 'Vette with the L88 427 is such a legend
Now, these were just with hp and torque figures. There's so much more from tires, rear gears, and CRs that determine the outcome. Swipe up to read more.
