• Watch The Mercedes-AMG G63 Go Up Against The Range Rover Sport SVR in a Tug-of-War Battle

The result will leave you befuddled!

It’s time to move on from the Cybertruck versus Ford F-150 tug-of-war duel. Unlike that war with an anti-climax, here’s one that will actually give you a closure.

The folks at Carwow brought along two unlikely superior SUVs in a battle of tug-of-war to determine who is tougher one. One on side, we have the iconic Mercedes-AMG G-Wagen, and on the other side there’s the Range Rover Sport SVR. While the latter is a tough-looking new breed, does it have what it takes to trump Mercedes-Benz’s raw-power, rich-heritage SUV?

What Do The Specs Look Like?

This is undoubtedly a battle for the ages. The Mercedes-AMG G63 comes packed with a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine that makes 585 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all the wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The Range Rover SVR is powered by a 5.0-liter, supercharged V-8 mill that churns out 575 ponies and 516 pound-feet of torque. Power is also sent to all the wheels, but through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

What Did The SVR Have For Breakfast?

To begin with, both SUVs were slotted into the low range with all differentials locked, and a grass/trail mode selected.

Both the drivers expected the Range Rover SVR to be on the losing side, but as soon as the war began, the SVR showed its true might and started pulling the G63 towards its side. Within a few seconds, the G63’s differential malfunction light lit up in the instrument cluster and it had to forfeit the first round. The G63 went for a break and was actually taken out for a quick spin to sort this out. As it turns out, the differentials weren’t fully engaged and they were trying to lock up while the engine was being revved. The issue was sorted out once the engine was turned off and on again.

Now, this time around, the G63 gave a tough fight even though it was smoking so hard. You can hear the SUVs race through the gears as well.

Both of them ground their tires and drivetrains out and decided to end it with a tie.

The guys then decided to get a guy named Daniel in the SVR and just sit there, being “heavy.” Although it sounds ridiculous, this actually helped SVR end the stalemate and pull the G63 into its territory.

For the next round, the G63 continued in the low range, but the differential locks were disengaged so that the car’s Electronic Stability Control could be put back on and the ‘Slippery’ drive mode engaged. This way the wheels wouldn’t spin and wouldn’t lose traction. However, despite all these different permutations and combinations, the G63 just couldn’t beat the SVR.

Land Rovers are said to be the toughest off-roaders in the market today, and the SVR seems to be continuing the legacy. Beating a legend like the G-Wagen is no small feat and Land Rover should be proud of that. What are your thoughts about this tug-of-war? Share them with us in the comments section below.
