The new SL is all set to be launched today. The iconic car is AMG-fied and will be heavy on performance moving forward. There isn’t a lot known about it yet, but we do know that the car will be powered by a V-8 engine and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The AMG SL will be launched today (10.28.2021) at 1000 EST and you can watch it right here:

What’s To Be Expected Of The AMG SL?

The automaker teased the new SL a day before its launch on its social media profiles.

This is the first new SL in nearly a decade and it will be infused with the AMG DNA. The new SL will not just replace the old SL, but it also replaces the GT Roadster. That said, the 2022 AMG SL will be built from the ground up and won’t share parts with either of the two cars it replaces.

The car is expected to feature two engines in four different states of tune. The base SL will be offered with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that will make 435 horses and 384 pound-feet of torque in all likelihood. It will be mated to a mild-hybrid system.

The other engine is the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8. In its least powerful avatar, it is expected to make 522 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque. The next model could churn out 612 horses and 627 pound-feet of torque. In the top-spec, the engine will be paired with an electric motor that will help it dish out as much as 800 ponies and 738 pound-feet of oomph!

We doubt it’ll trump the GT four-door coupe’s 831 horsepower and 1,033 pound-feet of torque figures, though. It could be offered with a rear-wheel-drive layout as standard and the 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system as optional on the base trims. All said and done, take these speculations with a pinch of salt.

From the spy shots that we’ve seen before, the SL will also ditch its hard-top for a cloth soft top. The overall design cues are inspired by the AMG GT model, which isn’t a bad thing by any means. There are swept-back headlamps, a front splitter, an AMG grille, flush door handles, a quad-tip exhaust system, etc.

On the inside, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch infotainment system can be expected. The signature turbine-style air vents, Nappa leather, etc. could be the other things present on the inside.

Final Thoughts

At a time when the automaker is chopping off convertibles from its lineup (read, SLC and S-Class convertibles), the SL receives more than just a refresh. This shows the faith the company has in this moniker, which leads us to believe that the new AMG SL will be a fantastic product. But, we’ll try not to get ahead of ourselves here and wait for the car to be launched. Don’t forget to tune in at 1000 EST to watch the live stream right here.
