Nürburgring lap records are always en vogue amongst the big sports car makes, but nowadays, their popularity seems to be growing even more. The latest comes from Porsche, which just claimed the title of Fastest Road-Legal Car to ever lap the ‘Ring, with the 911 GT2 RS MR circling the treacherous German racetrack in 6 minutes, 40.3 seconds.

Going Ten-Tenths At The Green Hell

The driver (Lars Kern, the same Porsche test driver responsible for previous 911 records at the ‘Ring) is absolutely on it from the word go, pushing the rear-engined 911 GT2 RS MR to the absolute limit in every corner. Which is really saying something, considering the track is nearly 13 miles long and presents a wide variety of technical challenges.

The video includes a host of interesting data and camera angles, including a windshield view, a driver cam, brake and throttle inputs, engine rpm, the currently selected gear, speed (in km/h), and a track map. And we like that - more data is always better.

This new time is in response to Lamborghini’s time of 6 minutes, 44 seconds, set by the highly impressive Aventador Superveloce Jota this past July.

As for what sets the 911 GT2 RS MR apart from the standard 911 GT2 RS, it’s all stuff to make it go faster, like a new coilover suspension spec, an extra water tank, new brake pads and steel-braided brake lines, and an upgraded aero spec.

The rest of it is just like the standard vehicle, which includes a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat six-cylinder engine producing 700 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission. The brakes are massive, with 410 mm (16.1-inch) rotors in front and 390 mm (15.4-inch) rotors in the rear. Flat out, the GT2 RS will hit 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 211 mph.
