‘Carwow’ uploaded another drag race video on its YouTube channel, this time involving two very unlikely competitors – a 2013 Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series versus the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. These two are completely different animals – one being a classy luxury car with drool-worthy gullwing doors, and the other a raw muscle car that loves being the alpha male. One comes with a naturally aspirated engine, and the other with a supercharged mill that puts out north of 750 horses. Where are you putting your money?

The Supercharged Is More Powerful, But Also Significantly Heavier

A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox drives the rear wheels exclusively. It’s quite heavy, tipping the scales at 4,224 pounds (1,916 kilos).

This car also comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that powers the rear wheels. It is 807 pounds (366 kilos) lighter, weighing in at 3,417 pounds (1,550 kilos).

The SLS Destroyed The Mustang In The Drag Races

In the first race, the Mustang didn’t hook well, causing the wheels to spin at the start. This was enough for the SLS to pip its rival and get the lead. The Mustang got quite close to the SLS by the end, but it couldn’t beat it. In the second race, the cars were neck-and-neck off the line, but the SLS pulled strong to keep the supercharged pony behind it. The Mustang couldn’t get past it, thus losing another race.

They gave it a shot again, but there was nothing the Mustang could do. In fact, this was the most convincing win for the German of all the races they took part in. Here, the Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series completed the quarter-mile run in 11.5 seconds, whereas the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 finished in 11.8 seconds.

The cars then moved on to roll races. The first one was from 50 mph with the cars in comfort settings and gearbox in automatic mode. This race was right in the Mustang’s alley with so much torque available at its disposal. There were no surprises and the muscle car had this race in its pocket right from the kickdown.

They attempted a roll race again, but this time in sportiest settings and manual mode for the gearbox. This time, the Mercedes gave it its all and sped off at kickdown. At half-mile, the SLS was ahead, but the Mustang was catching up. At about 150 mph, the pony managed to get a lead and eventually won the race.

The last round was a brake test from 100 mph. For a car that weighs over 800 pounds more than its rival, the Mustang stopped at almost the same distance as the AMG SLS. The AMG managed to win this round by the nose (quite literally), thus summing up an interesting series of tests.
