The day of reckoning is slowly approaching

It’s not often that we get to see a car testing with its top down, and things get much more interesting when the car in question is Porsche’s new 911 Turbo. The 992-generation model is still months away from release but power output is said to be in the 600-horsepower region, and those beefy hips make us enjoy what we see so far.

Porsche’s been racking up the miles on their 992 test mules for well over a year now. We’ve seen them testing out in the Eiffel Mountains, on the Nordschleife to be precise, on the snow, and on the open road. What we hadn’t seen, though, was the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet with the soft top folded. Now that we’ve also ticked that, there’s not much else we would ask for before release aside, maybe, for a spec sheet?

The current 991 Turbo S packs quite a mean punch with its 580 horsepower, so a break into 600-horsepower territory wouldn’t be wishful thinking for the new car. What we’re sure of, in any case, is that we’d love to be in the place of that test driver and enjoy the last warm days of 2018 aboard a 911 Turbo, be it a factory test car.

The next generation of the iconic Porsche 911 will arrive, fittingly, on the year that the brand celebrates its 70th anniversary.

Most likely, we’ll have to wait for the Carerra to debut at the LA Auto Show in November, as Porsche will most likely not launch its big banger in Paris, although some sources said they would, in spite of the state of the European markets. In any case, judging by Porsche’s past releases, we should see the production-ready 992 Turbo at next year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, a year after the Carerra which should be in dealerships by early 2019.

What we know

The hype has been growing around the new 911 Turbo for months now, especially as we look at a potentially turbo-only future for the non-electric Porsches. We’ll stay away from some rumors for now and just point out what’s fairly well-known. First off, the car will feature a meatier body than that of the basic 911, with wider hips to cover the wider track of the new model.

Just like the Coupe, the Cabriolet features a fixed wing on the slightly raised rear end with elongated taillights that remind us of the Mission-E concept.

What might set apart the Coupe from the Cabriolet at the back end might be the exhaust, with the Coupe being seen in almost undisguised form with quad rear exhaust while the open-top model has dual exhaust outlets that are round, not squared off as on the fixed-head version. If that is a feature that’s bound to go into production or it’s just a gimmick on a test mule has yet to be seen.

We also have to do a lot of guess work when it comes to the technical aspects. The PDK, dual-clutch automatic transmission stays put, as does the AWD system. The power output, which we hope is north of 600 horsepower, will be produced by a twin-turbo flat six which should see performance figures skyrocket.

The Coupe should reach 62 mph in as little as 2.5 seconds, so we guess the Cabriolet might dip under 3 seconds while top speed will surpass the 200 mph barrier with ease.

The top-of-the-pile Turbo S model will be even scarier than that, so there’s a lot to look forward to from the house of Zuffenhausen!
