Apple just previewed iOS 13, and it’s poised to be a big step forward for the iPhone. Among things like an all-new look to the user interface, a new Dark Mode, and an all-new map experience, Apple also announced that iOS 13 will bring big updates to Apple CarPlay as well. As of now, details are scant, but this update could bring it more up to speed with Android Auto and should make interacting with your infotainment system on the fly a more pleasurable experience.

What Does iOS 13 Bring to Apple CarPlay?

Apple has said precious little about what changes iOS 13 will bring to Apple CarPlay, but navigation should see a huge improvement thanks to Apple’s new Maps experience. More important, however, is the new dashboard view that brings your music and maps, among other things, into a single view – something that will make the interface much easier to use. Apple also promised that there will be a new calendar app and Siri support for third-party navigation and audio applications.

Do I Need to Update My Car for the iOS 13 Apple CarPlay Update?

You don’t need to update your car to get the latest updates to Apple CarPlay. Since Apply CarPlay is powered by iOS, all you have to do is update your phone, then connect it to your car’s infotainment system. All new features, as long as they are compatible with your car’s infotainment system, will now be available.

What Phones Are Compatible with iOS 13 and the New CarPlay Experience?

According to everything we’ve learned, iOS 13 will be compatible with the iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, and all models above. As such, these models should also support the new Apple CarPlay experience as well.

Does the iOS 13 Update Fix the Spotify Bugs in Apple CarPlay?

As of now, it’s too early to tell if the iOS 13 update and new CarPlay experience will make using Spotify easier or address any bugs that we experience with iOS 12 and the current CarPlay system.

Will iOS 13’s Apple CarPlay Maps be Better than Google Maps?

At this point, it’s hard to say if Apple’s new Maps experience will be better or worse than Google Maps. Apple hasn’t said a whole lot about it to date, however, an image included with the iOS 13 preview showcases a richer, more accurate map with better road coverage and better graphics. You can expect this experience to carry over to the new Apple CarPlay experience as well.
