What If Ford Slapped The Thunderbird Name On A Mid-Engined Competitor to the Chevy C8 Corvette?

Ford might be cooking up a new mid-engined car, and that means the C8 Corvette could be in danger

Ford versus Chevrolet is one of the most epic automotive rivalries we’ve come to witness. You’re probably familiar with the Mustang vs Camaro, or F-Series vs Silverado rivalries, but now an even older Ford vs Chevy rivalry could be resurrected. The mid-engine C8 Corvette is currently GM’s pride and joy and Ford doesn’t have anything to compete against it. At least not at this price range, as the Ford GT is way more expensive and produced in much lower numbers. However, it seems this might change very soon, as the Blue Oval was spotted testing a C8 on their home turf, in Dearborn.

There’s a good reason to believe Ford is working on a C8 Corvette slayer. and it seems the Thunderbird name will return with it
Reports indicate that a Torch Red C8 Corvette with a Z51 package has been spotted on Oakwood Boulevard, where numerous Ford facilities are located.

It is believed that Ford is benchmarking the C8 Corvette in order to make a mid-engine competitor. The Blue Oval filed a trademark for the Thunderbird name back in January 2021, so we could see a mid-engined competitor to the Corvette that rocks that very name.

A bit of Thunderbird history

A mid-engine C8 rival could have a lot in common with the Ford GT, which is in a different league to the C8

Back in 1954, the Thunderbird was conceived as a comfortable sports car with modern amenities like power seats, windows, and a comfortable ride, to name a few.

It also outsold the C1 Corvette 23:1, which could spell trouble for the C8, should Ford go through with a more affordable (than the GT) mid-engine Thunderbird.

Why a Ford is definitely cooking a Corvette competitor

It will be interesting to see Ford’s dedicated mid-engine rival to the C8 Corvette

Remember when the Nissan R35 GTR came out. Nissan’s goal was to create a Porsche 911 Turbo slayer. In the same way, the people from Nissan benchmarked a Porsche 911 (997) to see what exactly they are up against.

We believe Ford is currently gathering data with the C8 Corvette, which would set the pace for a mid-engine competitor from Ford. The Blue Oval will no doubt use whatever experience they have gathered over the years, with the Ford GT, so the potential C8 rival could have a lot in common with Ford’s existing mid-engine supercar.

The Corvette C8 has already proven to be a success. In fact, GM can’t keep up with demand, as the model offers supercar performance at a surprisingly affordable price. That said, we’ll keep an eye out for any future developments.
