What Paul Walker’s Death Means to the "Fast & Furious" Series
With the untimely and horrific death of a shining star of automotive film, Paul Walker, we are also faced with the reality that the loss of the star could spell the end of the Fast & Furious series. With Fast & Furious 7 already in the works, we were uncertain what would happen with the movie, which is scheduled for release on July 11, 2014, when the news of Walker’s death came out.
According to several reports, Fast & Furious 7 will not be scrapped, but it may be delayed, due to Walkers death. According to the report, Universal executives said that there may be some "rewrites and delays," but as of now, the film is still set to continue with production. A separate report, from TMZ, stated that key scenes with Walker were set for shooting just a few days from now, so this means the rewrites will likely be very heavy.
What weighs on our minds now, besides the tragic loss of this all-around good human being, is what will happen with the Fast & Furious franchise as a whole. Does the studio continue on without Walker’s character (Brian O’Conner)? Do they replace Walker as one of the leads? Do they simply end the series with the seventh installment?
We are willing to put our dollar on the series ending with Fast & Furious 7, as we expect the delays that the a studio rep spoke of — in anonymity, of course — to be a rewrite of the ending to wrap up the entire series.
We’re sure that that studio executives will address the situation, but that will likely not come until after the film’s release.
We’ll keep an eye out for any more details regarding the franchise.
