With both Audi and Mercedes-Benz now using 48-volt electrical systems in some of their cars, which turns them into mild hybrids, BMW is looking to take the same path. The 3 Series compact is already set to gain one, but a new rumor suggests that BMW will use a similar layout in the higher performance M3 model as well.

According to BMW Blog, the next-generation M3, codenamed the G80, will use a twin-turbo inline-six engine and an electric compressor for ultra-low rpm boost. A first for BMW, this system is already being used by Mercedes-Benz in their new line of AMG 53 model. The family already include three versions of the E-Class, a CLS, and a variant of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

The technology is already pretty familiar, and it's known for creating boost from zero rpm, thus eliminating turbo lag. The system also adds power to the drivetrain, and it would be a reliable way to increase output without taking the gasoline engine closer to its limit. There's no word as to how powerful the next M3 will be, but it needs close to 500 horsepower to remain competitive against the Mercedes-AMG C63. The gas inline-six will probably deliver at least 450 horsepower, while the 48-volt system could add around 30 horses. For reference, the 48-volt system used by Mercedes-AMG produces an extra 22 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

Naturally, the upcoming M4 will also benefit from this technology, as the two cars are virtually identical save for the coupe and sedan body styles. The tech will eventually find its way in other cars too, possibly starting with the 5 Series midsize.
