One thing is clear - Ford has been clumsy with its 'Focus' on electric cars (pun intended). While every other car manufacturer seems to have a plan of action in place for the future, Ford has just been launching facelifts or next generations of their existing products (read: Explorer and Everest). However, at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, the Blue Oval teased us with an electric SUV tentatively named Mach 1. This probably restored some faith in the fans and stakeholders. So, what is it all about? Read on.

Better late than never...

Ford didn’t offer any details about the Mach 1’s performance or show what it will look like. The company simply rolled a short teaser video about the project. What's surprising is that Ford announced it will pump $11 billion into electric vehicles in the next five years, with 24 hybrid and 16 fully electric vehicles to debut by 2022. We're just four years away, and all we have is a promo that doesn't even give a glimpse of the SUV! Hopefully, the Mach 1 will be previewed in conceptual form within the next 12 months – if so, expect it to debut at a major auto show.

Our Take

The teaser has definitely caught our attention. This electric SUV by Ford is expected to hit the markets in 2020. Although there aren't many electric SUV's in the market currently, we're sure to have a plethora of them in the coming years. Hyundai already offers the Kona EV, VW's ID Crozz is expected to go on sale by 2020, then there are other luxury alternatives like the Jaguar i-Pace EV. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi will also have their electrified compact SUV’s to market by 2020. Do you think Ford is a tad bit late to enter the electric market? Or could the blue oval prove its mettle?
