With The New Off-Road Trim, Mercedes G-Wagon Returns To Its Military Roots

The Mercedes G-Wagon Professional Line is not your typical, flashy G-Wagon, as It doesn’t mind getting dirty

The Mercedes G-Wagon is one of Mercedes’ signature vehicles. None of the other German premium carmakers have an analog to it. For decades the Mercedes G-Wagon has been every rich person’s favorite way of giving the middle finger to all “plebians mopping around in a Corolla or an Elantra”. The boxy SUV has been interpreted by many tuners, such as BRABUS, MANSORY, and others, giving it an aggressive design, and making it appealing to people like celebrities and drug dealers.

However, the boxy SUV has much humbler beginnings, as it was originally developed as a military vehicle. It seems Mercedes remembered that and decided to give us a G-Wagon that doesn’t mind getting dirty.

The new version is called the G-Wagon Professional Line and it turns the boxy SUV from a pavement prowler into the rugged off-roader nature intended it to be.

The G-Wagon gets stone-resistant headlight guards, mud flaps all around, and beefier tires.

In addition, the 22-inch AMG wheels have been replaced with more rugged 18-inch wheels, finished in black. Also finished in black are the roof, fenders, mirror caps, and even the Mercedes badge. The Professional Line also offers a Professional-spec spare tire holder, and roof rack with ladder, able to support a tent.

Do you think the G-Class should go back to being a rugged off-roader?
The package is an addition to the 2022 Mercedes G-Wagon, which unfortunately means it will not be offered in the U.S., at least for now.

This is due to the G-Wagon’s break from the U.S. market, forced by supply issues. Although the above-mentioned accessories will not turn the G-Wagon into a hardcore off-roader, it’s a step closer to the SUV’s original purpose – to be a rugged off-roader. This is a surprising move from Mercedes, since the EV equivalent of the car, dubbed EQG, is almost ready to go on sale, but nevertheless a welcome one.

Born in 1992, I come from a family of motoring enthusiasts. My passion for cars was awoken at the age of six, when I saw a Lamborghini Diablo SV in a magazine. After high school I earned a master’s degree in marketing and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications. Over the years, I’ve practiced and become skilled in precision driving and to date have test driven more than 250 cars across the globe. Over the years, I’ve picked up basic mechanical knowledge and have even taken part in the restoration of a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint. Lately, I’ve taken a fancy to automotive photography, and while modern cars are my primary passion, I also have a love for Asian Martial Arts, swimming, war history, craft beer, historical weapons, and car restoration. In time, I plan my own classic car restoration and hope to earn my racing certificate, after which I expect to establish my own racing team.  Read full bio
