The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ still have life in them. Ok, so technically, both models are still around. But, there have been questions surrounding their future, specifically as it relates to the second-generation version of each sports car. There’s still no confirmation from either Toyota or Subaru about their plans, but a new report reveals that both brands have already begun developing successors to the 86 and BRZ, respectively. More importantly, they’re doing it together again.

The report from Japan Times has a number of revealing tidbits surrounding the status of both the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ. The first is that it’s actually happening so, you know, yay!

The second is that Toyota and Subaru are still doing it together, including plans for the 86 to actually be produced at Subaru’s production facility. This is important because it can be seen as an elevation of the partnership that both brands have since they started working on the first-generation models.

The third and most important tidbit from the Japan Times report pertains to the engine the second-generation sports coupes will use. According to the report, the next-generation 86 — and presumably, the BRZ, too — will likely receive a Japan Times 2.4-liter engine as opposed to the 2.0-liter unit that it currently has. Granted, neither Toyota or Subaru have confirmed plans for second-gen versions of the 86 and BRZ, but if this report is accurate, we’re not only getting a pair of second-gen models, but they could have bigger engines that have more power too. As fantastic as the 86 and BRZ have been in their current iterations — they’re tire-slayers of the highest order — the biggest gripe against them revolved around the lack of over-the-top power. Sure, 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque are great, but there’s a lot of room there for improvement.

Now, it seems like Toyota and Subaru are now listening to the public. A 2.4-liter engine is not only bigger, but it could also be turbocharged, something that already has us salivating at the possibilities. Hopefully, the report gives us an early idea of the future of both the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ. Who knows, Toyota and Subaru might already be at work developing their respective sports car successors.

Cross your fingers that it’s actually happening.
