There’s no hiding from the fact that the 2020 SL is an old car. Sure, it still has some fire in its belly as far as attractiveness stands, but all its bones are old and so is the tech that gives them life.

The good news is that Mercedes-Benz knows it’s time to churn out a new-generation SL, and it’s bound to arrive in 2022. Here’s what it might look like according to this render that’s based on recent spyshots of 2022 SL test mules doing their pre-production dance.

We hope the new SL will keep the sleekness alive

The SL has what we like to call that royal DNA as its roots can be traced back all the way to the 300SL Gullwing. Mercedes-Benz knows that and customers know that too, that’s why there will be a new SL coming out in 2021 as a 2022 model.

Not much is known about it, though, neither in terms of mechanicals nor design. That’s why this render is the best we’ve got so far. It helps that it’s based on recent spy shots of 2022 SL pre-production cars spotted during the customary road testing, so at least it gives out the SL’s proportions right.

Moving on to what’s under that beautiful outer shell, Car and Driver says the SL range will likely feature an SL53 and the SL63 range-topper. The latter should pack the AMG GT’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, while the former is a likely candidate for the 3.0-liter inline-six found inside the current AMG E53 sedan, where it cranks out 429 horsepower.

There’s nothing sure at the moment, but the SL might get a detuned flavor of the 577-horsepower mill. In any case, it’s too early to tell.

As for the render in discussion here, do you think it’s coming close to what the real 2022 Mercedes-AMG will look like?
