The GTS 4.0 versions of the Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, basically the only naturally aspirated models you can buy, are now available with a new seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission (PDK).

These gearboxes are similar to those offered in the 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. They make both models quicker from 0 to 62 mph, but they also cost £2,300, which converts to roughly $3,000 as of September 2020. Is the premium worth it? Let's find out!

The PDK transmission makes both models significantly quicker

Yes, automatic transmissions take away some of the fun and some Porsche purists don't like them, but they improve performance significantly. With a PDK, there are no interruptions in acceleration during gear changes, which improves comfort, but also reduce off-the-line sprints rather dramatically.

They also reach 124 mph in 13.7 seconds, almost a half-second quicker than the manual version.

Naturally, the standard Sport Chrono package has been revised to work with the gear shift characteristics of the new PDK. The Sport Plus mode helps you reach the quickest acceleration times, as does the Launch Control features, which activates an automatic race start. The PKD-equipped cars cost an additional £2,300, which converts to around $3,000.

As a brief reminder, the GTS 4.0 models are fitted with the naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter flat-six engine from the range-topping Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 models. The unit cranks out 394 horsepower, a 20-horsepower decrease compared to the GT4 and Spyder. They also benefit from an extra 35 horses compared to the regular GTS models, powered by turbocharged, 2.5-liter flat-four mills.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 are also available with the PDK

Porsche offers the same gearbox on the range-topping models too. When fitted with this transmission, they hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, a half-second quicker than the manual version. The 0-to-124 mph sprint also drops from 13.8 to 13.4 seconds. These cars also come with upgraded locking rear differentials that improve both dynamics and traction.

What else is new?

The PDK transmissions are part of a bigger upgrade that adds new features across the lineup. The entire 718 family is now available with high-quality Race-Tex fabric instead of Alcantara, while the Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 are available with a new Python Green paint. The 718 Spyder can also be ordered with 20-inch wheels in Aurum, a feature previously offered on the 718 Cayman GT4 only.
