BMW already has a big family of M-badged crossovers and SUVs. The X1 M, X5 M, and X6 M are all in the market. An X3 M is also in the cards, and the X2 just arrived, so you can expect some buzz of an M version arriving soon. Then there’s the X4 M, the middle child in this growing family of raunchy Bimmer M crossovers and SUVs. BMW has yet to confirm the existence of an X4 M, but there have been rumors about its pending arrival, not to mention a multitude of spy photos of the car doing some testing. Even if BMW is (still) keeping mum, the prospect of an X4 M is not a matter of “if” the car is coming as it is “when” it’s arriving.

Admittedly, there’s not a lot of info to discuss, but sources within BMW have intimated to BMW Blog that both the X3 and X4 will get M versions in the future. If that’s the case, X-Tomi Design’s render of the performance SUV is probably as close as we’ll get to seeing what the X4 M could look like before it does hit the market in the future. It’s clear from the render that X-Tomi used the X6 M as the inspiration for his take on the X4 M. It’s actually a good peg because both models share a coupe-crossover design together with the X2. A lot of M-specific components are also present in the render, including the massive air intakes, the wider fenders, and the M skirts on the sides. If the X4 M looks anything like X-Tomi’s rendering, my level of intrigue for the performance SUV just went up a few notches.

Under its hood, the X4 M will likely use an upgraded 3.0-liter straight-six engine that will reportedly make around 450 horsepower. An all-wheel-drive setup is just as likely, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission, the same one that’s being used in the new BMW M5.

Say what you will about BMW’s silence regarding a potential X4 M, but a lot of signs point to it happening. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see when Bimmer decides to announce its arrival. Hopefully, it happens sooner than later.
