Lately, Tesla has been talking about ‘Right to Repair,’ and how it is trying to get on board with the idea. Now, Tesla has taken the first step by releasing its parts catalog for Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Roadster. There's even a tool catalog that will allow you to, eventually, order all the specialized tools you need to tear down and rebuild any Tesla model.

This is good news for you if you like to work on your own car, or if you prefer to have a mechanic outside of Telsa perform maintenance and repair.

It Is The Need Of The Hour

The “Right to Repair” means auto manufacturers must have the means to sell replacement parts and make their diagnostic and service manuals available to independent repair shops and consumers. Tesla has not made it easy to work on its cars by limiting access to documentation and parts.

Most automakers agreed to make their diagnostic codes and repair data available in a common format by the 2018 model year in order to avoid having state-by-state requirements. Although Tesla did not partake in this syndicate, it still went ahead with it as it would have been weird if the company remained alone in not providing the service. Last year, Tesla’s ex-President, Jon McNeill, said that the company was working on making its documentation public.

The catalog includes every part for all of Tesla’s vehicles currently on the market - the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and the original Roadster. Until now, ordering parts from Tesla as an individual was difficult, but things may change now.

Final Thoughts

It comes as a boon to many owners. The automaker seemed a little stingy at the beginning when it came to supporting the ‘Right to Repair,’ but it all looks good now. There's still no word on how hard it will be to actually obtain any part or tool you might need, but this is a good first step.
