Chevrolet has been reducing its hatchback and sedan lineup for the past few years. Just a few days ago, the American automaker confirmed to CarsDirect that the Spark, which is one of the most affordable cars in America, will be discontinued after summer 2022. Unfortunately, the future of the Malibu is also uncertain as Chevrolet recently stopped accepting orders for its midsize sedan.

First reported by CarsDirect, Chevrolet spokesperson Kevin Kelly says that they've halted orders for the Malibu because its allocation for this year is already full.

This is a worrying sign of the Malibu's future if they've already halted orders as early as February. Let's take a look at the latest sales figures. According to GM's sales reports, they sold 39,376 units of the Malibu last year. This is a huge drop from the 227,881 units it sold in 2016. For the past five years, sales of the Malibu have been on a decline, which is no surprise as Americans continue to gravitate towards SUVs and crossovers such as the Chevrolet Equinox. After all, with production challenges such as the chip shortage, Chevrolet would definitely gravitate its production resources towards vehicles that sell in far higher numbers.

On the other hand, Chevrolet sold 24,460 units of the soon-to-be-discontinued Spark last year. Do you also remember the Chevrolet Cruze? When that compact car was discontinued in 2018, its sales were hovering at just 184,751 units.} What are the chances that a midsize car that's selling at just nearly a fifth of the Cruze's figures will still see a future at Chevrolet's portfolio?

However, while the future of the Chevrolet Malibu's existence in the United States seems bleak, Automotive News says in its Future Product Pipeline page that the Malibu won't get canceled until 2025.

Assuming that the Malibu goes to the grave, this will leave Chevrolet with just the Camaro and Corvette as their low-slung vehicles. Chevrolet's future product portfolio won't be too different from Ford's, in which the performance car, the Mustang, is the only car in its lineup.
