We want Mazda to make a Le Mans comeback with one of these, please

Mazda is no stranger to Le Mans. In fact, the Japanese outlet tasted success at Le Mans on June 23, 1991, finished first in front of the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar, becoming the first Asian carmaker to win the famed 24-hour race.

Helping Mazda on its way to victory was the 787B rotary-powered race car drove by Johnny Herbert at an average speed of 127.62 mph. So there’s no wonder why so many car aficionados and Mazda fans have been wondering when and if will the carmaker make a comeback at Le Mans. While there’s no info on such plans, we wish Mazda would decide to return to France with a prototype that looks like this one.

Enter the Mazda Vision RX-10 Longtail

Although Mazda has its in-house-designed Vision Coupé shown in 2017, this creation is not sanctioned by the brand.

The Vision RX-10 Longtail is the work of Maximilian Schneider, who happens to work as exterior designer for Mitsubishi in Tokyo, according to his Instagram description.

His goal was to come up with a Le Mans-ready Mazda race car that builds on the 787B’s past glory in a modern manner. The modern, in this case, sits in the hybrid powertrain of the RX-10 Longtail, one that mixes hydrogen power with a 2.3-liter rotary engine.

According to Maximilian, the car would be eligible to race in the Le Mans Hypercar Class. It would pack 780 horsepower coming from the turbocharged internal combustion engine and 250 horsepower generated by two electric motors tasked with driving the front axle.

On top of that, the RX-10 Longtail is also an example of what a lightweight performance car should be, as it tips the scales at 1,450 digital kilos (3,197 pounds, roughly) and can reach a top speed of 427 kph (265 mph).

Technical stuff aside, we can only invite you to have a good look at Maximilian’s renders and check out his other work too, via his Insta feed. Trust us when we tell you that you’ll have plenty to look at.

DETAILS! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 The Mazda Vision RX-10 Longtail is simple and reduced, but has some fine details. This car is a Hydrogen-powered street legal 2,3L rotary to homologate for the new LeMans Hypercar class. Reminiscent of the long aero tails, it has 780 turbocharged horsepower, accompanied by 250hp generated through two front-driven electric motors. The car weights a total of only 1450kg dry and has a topspeed of 427 km/h. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read More
