Volkswagen is coming up with a more stylish EV than the ID.4

LISTEN 02:06

Volkswagen recently announced the ID.4 GTX. With it, the German brand announced the beginning of its sporty EV lineup. What’s more important, however, is that during that same presentation, the new ID.5 was shown for the first time and with it, an ID.5 GTX was confirmed. This is the latest vehicle to utilize VW’s MEB platform for EVs. Moreover, the ID.5 will be a sleeker version of the ID.4. Think of it as an ID.4 Coupe.

A camouflaged ID.5 was spotted earlier in April doing tests. As for when it will arrive – “soon" – according to VW CEO Ralf Brandstatter. The debut is expected to be in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Volkswagen’s marketing people seem to have had fun designing the ID.5 presentation, which includes the car being visualized in red and yellow pattern, driving through various surrealistic environments, including drifting in the snow - the latter of which is always a good way to present a car made with some performance in mind.

Towards the end of the ID.5 presentation, the car turns into a red-laser as it accelerates after which it zooms out into a plug. The video is trying to convey that even electric cars can be fun when done right. When it comes out, the ID.5 is said to be the ultimate blend of EV performance and sustainability.

As we mentioned, ID.5 will be very similar to ID.4, with the main difference being the silhouette, which in ID.5 will be more coupe-like. The powertrains are expected to be the same as in the ID.4. The base version would have a rear-mounted electric motor, producing 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 228 pound-feet (309 Nm), while the GTX would get two electric motors (one for each axle), with a combined output of up to 295 horsepower (220 kilowatts). Even Volkswagen, it seems, will be able to be an EV performance brand.
