It was just a few days ago that Mercedes teased us with an image of the EQS SUV and we're still about a week away from Mercedes' official reveal of the SUV. But, I suppose you won't have to wait that long as some spy shots of the flagship all-electric SUV have already leaked online by Cochespias. Let's try and break down the design of what is about to become the range-topper of Mercedes' EQ lineup.

Overview

Mercedes is obviously pretty serious about electrifying its portfolio and as a result, we saw a whole host of vehicles at last year's IAA show in Munich. The Mercedes stand was made up of the EQE, EQB, EQG concept,, and the EQS Maybach SUV.

As for the regular EQS SUV, Mercedes has already revealed quite a few aspects of the upcoming SUV. The German automaker had previously shared images of a highly camouflaged EQS SUV undergoing testing both on snow and out in the desert and proper shots of what the production-spec cabin will look like. It is based on Mercedes' EVA2 scalable platform that also underpins the EQS and EQE sedans.

First Look: 2023 Mercedes Benz EQS SUV

As you can see, the front end now wears the contrasting black corporate face of Mercedes' new all-electric EQ brand. With a giant three-pointed star up front you've got the trademark three LEDs on within the headlamp cluster to indicate that this indeed is part of the 'S' family of vehicles.

Moving to the rear, what draws you in is that light bar. You can just about see those haunches which add a little bit of muscle to the overall form.

Apart from that, there isn't anything radically adventurous on this crossover. You've got the obligatory, contrasting cladding and a running board along with very EV-like rims, which now have more spokes than ever. Within the gloss, black trim in the back hides what is supposed to mimic a pair of chrome exhausts, on an EV? Come on now, Mercedes.

What do we know so far?

As I mentioned earlier, we already know what the cabin of the EQS SUV looks like. It comes as no surprise that there is a lot of the EQS sedan in the interior of the SUV, albeit with a lot more headroom of course.

You've got the massive hyper-screen that pretty much takes up the entire width of the wraparound dash and what look like supremely comfortable cosseting chairs, that I'm sure will let you experience the next level in waft-ability. Since this is the SUV, you've got three rows, although the last row sure does look rather tight.

Coming to what will power the new flagship, we can expect a dual motor setup with power outputs between 329 and 751 horsepower, paired to a 90kWh or 108kWh battery pack, respectively. Mercedes had earlier stated that the EQS Maybach SUV could do 370 miles on a full charge.

The 'Regular' EQS will obviously be lighter, and so you should expect about 400 miles of range. While the EQS sedan can be had with rear-wheel drive, the SUV version will most likely feature 4MATIC AWD with some fancy off-road hardware and gubbins thrown in, should you decide to take your prized possession off the pavement.

Conclusion

The new EQ range from Mercedes sure does seem a little confusing to me, especially surrounding the names and what makes it even more complicated is the fact that their ICE vehicles are on sale as well.

So technically, this should have been the GQS, since G' stands for Gelände, which roughly translates to 'terrain' in German. But, since the sub-brand for Mercedes' all-electric line is EQ, you have EQS and this is an SUV, hence EQS SUV. Sounds complicated, isn't it? I wonder what the AMG version will be called since the EQS AMG is already here.

As for the EQS SUV, Mercedes will unveil it on April 19th. When it goes on sale in 2022, it will take on the likes of the full-size all-electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X and the BMW iX. Watch this space.
