These are the cars that you won’t be able to buy in 2021

2020 was a slower-than-usual year for the automotive market. Factories had to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the global lockdown cancelled nearly all major auto shows, causing delays of new car introductions. But most releases eventually went ahead as planned and we saw tens of brand-new vehicles hit dealerships or brake cover for 2021. But 2020 also saw many cars go out of production or being pulled off the U.S. market. We’ve lost more than 15 nameplates, and while some of them won’t be missed, others retired with iconic status. Here’s our list of cars that you won’t be able to buy in North America in 2021.

Acura RLX

Introduced in 2014 as a successor to the RL, the RLX is the spiritual successor of the iconic Legend, the brand’s first vehicle on American soil. But despite its heritage, the RLX hasn’t been doing well recently. With only 1,000 units sold per year, the RLX was included on the company’s to-be-axed list for 2021. But that’s also because the second-generation TLX will step in as a one size fits all sedan in the U.S., where four-door cars like this are no longer as popular as they used to be. After six years on the market, the RLX will probably be forgotten soon.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

The car that brought Alfa Romeo back to the United States, the 4C is also heading into the history books. Alfa Romeo discontinued the coupe in 2019 and it’s now ending production of the 4C Spider for 2020. But the roadster is going away with a bang, in the form of a limited-edition model, the 33 Stradale Tributo. An homage to the iconic 33 Stradale of the 1960s, this special edition comes with a bespoke exterior paint, gold wheels, and red-tinted carbon-fiber inside. Alfa Romeo is not developing a successor for the 4C, so this nameplate is going away for good after seven years in showrooms.

Bentley Mulsanne

Launched in 2010 as a replacement for the Arnage, the Mulsanne was sold alongside the Flying Spur. The latter was based on the Continental GT coupe design-wise, so the Mulsanne took the role of a flagship model, the more imposing four-door that would go after Rolls-Royce competition. The Mulsanne’s retirement has to do with the fact that its 6.75-liter V-8 engine can no longer meet emissions regulations, but Bentley also opted to deliver a high-trimmed Flying Spur model as a replacement. The Mulsanne is directly linked to iconic models like the Brooklands, Turbo R, T Series, and S Series, so we can only hope that it will return at some point.

BMW i8

BMW Debuts “New” i8 Coupe and the First i8 Roadster Exterior Wallpaper quality

Weighs just 3,381 pounds

The i8 was a big step forward for BMW, showing that the German company is capable to deliver a sporty hybrid at a decent price (at least when compared to exotic sports cars). When it was unveiled in 2014, the i8 was one of the most advanced cars on the market, featuring a CFRP passenger cell, an aluminum chassis, loads of carbon-fiber components, and a stylish body. The gasoline-electric combo that includes a three-cylinder engine cranks out a combined 369 horsepower. The i8 became the world’s most popular hybrid sports car and U.S. sales exceeded 7,000 units. It’s mission accomplished for the i8 and time for BMW to deliver a replacement.

Buick Regal

First introduced in 1973, the Regal is one of Buick’s most notable modern nameplates, having spawned iconic models like the GNX and GSX over the years. Starting 2011, the Regal became a rebadged version of the Opel Insignia, which helped Buick bring the wagon version back to the U.S. With Opel sold to Groupe PSA in 2017 and the demand for cars in the U.S. at a historic low, GM is not interested in redesigning a Regal from scratch, so it decided to axe the nameplate altogether at the end of the 2020 model year. The Regal will remain available in China though.

Dodge Grand Caravan

The Grand Caravan is probably the most iconic American vehicle that’s getting the axe for 2021. Introduced in late 1983 as the world’s first production minivan, the Caravan became a hot item across Chrysler dealerships. The most recent Grand Caravan dates back to 2008 and even though it’s not as popular as it used to be, it still made up almost 30 percent of the brand’s sales volume in recent years. While the decision to discontinue the Grand Caravan beyond 2020 seems a bit weird, it seems that FCA wants Dodge to focus on performance models from now. Chrysler will continue to offer the Pacifica to compete against the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and the Kia Sedona.

Dodge Journey

Dodge also axed the Journey crossover at the end of the 2020 model year. Just as old as the Grand Caravan, having been introduced in 2008, the Journey soldiered on with next to no updates for more than 10 years. Since it’s based on a platform co-develop with Mitsubishi that FCA stopped using in any other vehicle in 2017, it’s not surprising that the Journey is a no longer on the table. Given Dodge’s new strategy to focus on performance model, we won’t see a replacement either.

Fiat 124 Spider

The 124 Spider is by far the coolest car Fiat has introduced in recent years. Developed alongside the latest Mazda MX-5, the 124 Spider is a modern revival of the company’s iconic roadster from the 1960s and crossed the pond to the U.S. with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, as well as an Abarth package with 168 horses. The Italian roadster wasn’t particularly successful, so Fiat decided to withdraw it from the European market in 2019. The 124 Spider remained in showrooms in the U.S. in 2020, but you won’t be able to buy it in 2021. FCA isn’t planning on offering a successor anytime soon.

Ford Fusion

Once a popular nameplate, the Fusion is no longer a priority for Ford in the U.S., where buyers favor the brand’s crossovers and SUVs. Ford announced plans to discontinue all of its sedans in North America in 2018 and the last Fusion rolled off the assembly line in July 2020. With the Fusion gone for good, Ford’s U.S. car lineup includes just two nameplates, the Mustang and the GT. The Fusion is rumored to return in 2021 as a crossover/wagon model called Fusion Active.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

Unlike the Fusion, the Shelby GT350 wasn’t discontinued as part of the company’s plan to focus on high-riding vehicles. The GT350 was introduced as a limited-edition model and 2020 was its final model year in production. Introduced in 2015, the GT350 had a somewhat short life-cycle, but it remained in production longer than its predecessor (2013-2014). The track-oriented GT350R was also discontinued alongside the standard GT350. With the naturally aspirated Shelby now out of the way, Ford will probably focus on some special-edition variants of the supercharged GT500.

Honda Civic Coupe

No need to panic, the Honda Civic isn’t going away entirely. The Japanese firm is only discontinuing the coupe versions sedan. Yes, that’s sad news because the Civic Coupe was THE car that started the "sport compact" trend, but the brutal truth is that no one buys two-door cars nowadays. And no one really buys two-door Civics since the hot Type R is a five-door model. The tenth-generation Civic is also migrating toward the history books in 2021, making way for the next-gen model, so it makes sense for Honda to trim the lineup. That’s why the Civic Si sedan is also taking a break before returning for the 2022 model year with the eleventh-generation compact.

Honda Fit

The Fit is the third Honda model that you won’t be able to buy in the U.S. in 2021. The Fit is a cute and yet aggressive hatchback that packs a solid 130 horsepower. It’s also versatile and comes with all the modern tech you need. However, sales of small hatchbacks are lower than they’ve ever been and Honda is dropping the nameplate and forwarding the HR-V as a replacement. The latter is pretty much a fit on stilts, so I guess the Japanese brand has a point. The Fit is sold as the Jazz in other markets and will remain in dealerships outside North America.

Jaguar XF Sportbrake

The already tiny station wagon market will become even smaller in 2021, because Jaguar decided to pull the XF Sportbrake out of the U.S. Hardly surprising given that most buyers would rather use crossovers as grocery getters, but a bit sad since the XF Sportbrake looks kind of hot. If you’re still on the market for a midsize wagon, you’re only option is the Volvo V90. You can also get the E-Class Wagon and A6 Avant, but both are offered in their crossover-inspired trims only. 2021 is definitely a bad year for wagon in North America.

Jaguar XE

Cars Discontinued in 2020

The XF Sportbrake is not the only Jag that’s going away in 2021. The British company is also retiring the XE sedan. Introduced as a competitor for the highly popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and BMW 3 Series, the XE was a slow seller in the U.S. for most of its time on the market. The decision is a bit surprising given that the XE moved more units than the XF in 2019, but Jaguar thinks that the latter "offers superior value to entry luxury sedan buyers" through more interior space and more standard equipment.

Lexus GS

Cars Discontinued in 2020

A compromise between the IS and the flagship LS, the Lexus GS has been around since 1993 and it was most recently redesigned in 2011. Nine years old as of 2020, the GS was discontinued in August with no direct replacement announced. The nameplate was pulled out of the European markets back in 2018, where it was replaced by the front-wheel drive ES, but the midsize remained a while longer on U.S. soil. But the 2020 is the end of the line for the GS in North America too. The Japanese sedan wasn’t particularly successful recently, with fewer than 3.500 units per year sold in 2019 and 2020.

Lincoln Continental

Just like Cadillac, Lincoln failed to deliver a flagship vehicle capable to give the German competition a run for its money. Sure, it was cool to see the Continental return after 14 years, but the revived flagship lasted only four years on the market. Slow sales and a lack of interest for American-built sedans prompted Lincoln to discontinue the Continental i October 2020 with no placed for a replacement. 2021 will be a year without flagship sedans Lincoln and Cadillac.

Mercedes-Benz SLC

Cars Discontinued in 2020

The Mercedes-Benz SLC may have been introduced in 2015, but the platform is actually much older than that. The SLC badge came with the mid-cycle facelift that Mercedes-Benz applied to the R172-generation SLK, which dates back to 2011. Nine years old as of 2020, the SLC was retired from the Bremen-based assembly line with Final Edition models. Dated compared to rivals from BMW and even Toyota, the SLC won’t return anytime soon. Its bigger sibling, the SL, will make a comeback with an AMG platform, but the future of the SLC is still unknown as of late 2020.

Nissan 370Z

The Nissan 370Z is still available in showrooms across the U.S. and the Japanese company did not say it will be axed in 2021. But the upcoming release of the 400Z and the fact that the 370Z is already 11 years could send the nameplate into retirement by the end of 2021. Although still fun to drive, the 370Z is a really old car and it can no longer keep up with the competition when it comes to interior amenities and technology. But the 370Z has seen a few good years and it’s been around longer than its predecessor, the 350Z.
