Arguably one of the most iconic sports car ever built, the Seven has been around for nearly six decades. Launched in 1957 by Lotus, the marque was later purchased by Caterham, which introduced its very own take on the roadster in 1973. Although Caterham refined the design, introduced new materials, and better engines, the Seven soldiered on into the 21st century mostly unchanged, being built on the same recipe that automotive genius Colin Chapman outlined in the 1950s.

The current Seven lineup includes no fewer than six road-going models, but Caterham has also launched several special-edition roadsters in recent years. In October 2016, the British firm unveiled yet another special Seven, dubbed Harrods Edition. As the name suggests, it is inspired by Britain's upmarket department store, but what's more important here is that the Harrods Edition marks the debut of Caterham Signature, the company's first personalization program.

Available exclusively at Harrods, the Harrods Edition includes a host of special features which "demonstrate the breadth of options new Caterham buyers can add to their vehicles." Extra features include paint colors and designs, dashboard and interior styling, embroidery, and even the color of the chassis.

"The Caterham Seven has always been one of the easiest cars on the road to personalize, because every car is hand-built and bespoke for each customer. But now we’ve formalized the personalization options available to our customers into the Caterham Signature program, which will outline the almost infinite combinations of options you can select. You can even have your name stitched into the seat," said David Ridley, Caterham's chief commercial officer.

What makes the Caterham Seven Harrods Special Edition special

At first glance, the Harrods Edition isn't any different than the Seven 420S it is based on, but the livery it is wrapped in isn't available in the standard model's palette. Created specifically for this car, the custom paint is based on Harrods' trademark color and, naturally, goes by the name Harrods Green. A pair of white stripes with gold pinstripes that run the entire length of the engine hood round off the Seven's bespoke exterior. As far as visible elements are concerned, that is, as the chassis has also been powder-coated in gold, a new option that comes with the Caterham Signature program. Being a 420 equipped with the S Pack, the Harrods Edition also comes with a full windscreen, side windows and an aero cap filler.

Inside, the Harrods-inspired theme continues with a Butterscotch leather upholstery, which goes well with the exquisite-looking wood dashboard and provides a great contrast with the black center tunnel and the green dash top. The store's name is embroidered in gold on the seat backs, while the gear knob features the letter "H," also in gold. The same letter is also carved on the ignition key. Other goodies that come with the S Pack include a fully carpeted floor, unique instrument cluster, a standard heater, Momo steering wheel, and a 12V socket.

Under the hood, the Harrods Edition is a standard Seven 420, meaning it packs the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The naturally aspirated unit is a Ford Duratec four-pot that is tuned by Caterham and generates 210 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Charging from zero to 60 mph takes only 3.8 seconds thanks to car's tremendous power-to-weight ratio of 375 horses per ton, while top speed is rated at 136 mph. The transmission is a five-speed manual gearbox, while the suspension system includes coil springs and Bilstein dampers.

Pricing for the Harrods Edition starts from £59,999, a massive premium over the Seven 420 equipped with the S Pack, which retails from £29,990. There's no word as to how many will be built, but the Harrods Edition will be on sale exclusively in the Knightsbridge store in London.
