The Chevy Blazer name dates back to 1969 when Chevy introduced the K5 Balzer, a large, rugged SUV with some serious utility and off-road chops. The Blazer name remained in use for this specific model until 1994 when GM decided the Tahoe name was a better fit. In 1983, 11 years before the K5 Blazer was discontinued, Chevy slapped the Blazer name on a smaller SUV known as the S-10 Blazer. From 1990 to 2000, there was a rebadged Tahoe sold in certain markets as the “Grand Blazer.” Despite the different shapes and sizes and designs over the years, there’s one thing all of these models stayed true to, and that was their beastly nature and ability to go anywhere while taking one hell of a beating. This trend continued all the way until 2005 when Chevy discontinued the S10 Blazer and shelved the name for what we thought would be forever. Then, 2019 came, and here were are looking at the Blazer name all over again.

The problem with the new, 2019 Chevy Blazer is that it has attracted polarizing opinions. For some, the new Blazer is too much of a family hauler with little ability to go off-road and, thus, just doesn’t live up to the Blazer name – especially when you consider Ford’s bringing back a boxy Bronco and Ram is bring back the RamCharger. Others, however, seem to like the design of the new Blazer – it’s sporty thanks to its Camaro design cues, has decent interior space, and may even be a good family vehicle. This second group of opinion makers are, obviously, the ones that didn’t look at the old Blazer as a part of Chevy heritage. But this is where we are now, and when we got the opportunity to try out the new Blazer to see how it holds up in the real world, we couldn’t turn down the opportunity. Does it oppose a true threat to the segment, or did Chevy drop the ball? Join us as we explore the all-new Chevy Blazer and how it holds up against the competition.

We don’t usually feature tuner vehicles in our wallpaper of the day series. In fact, we’ve been kind of lazy with our wallpaper of the day series, haven’t we? Well, either way, that’s without consequence at this point. The point is that today, we’re featuring a tuner car or, to be more specific, a restomod. It’s a restomod by none other than RingBrothers, and it’s the best off-road restomod that we’ve ever laid eyes on. It looks like a stock K5 Blazer from a distance, but once you get up close, you’ll see the RingBrothers put in some serious work here. It has custom running boards and side panels, and it has even been lifted by an entire inch to make room for the 17-inch wheels. The interior is wrapped in a subtle leather and under the hood sits a GM-sourced, LS3 crate engine that’s good for 430 ponies. A seven-seat version of the Blazer for China and South America

The Chevrolet Blazer XL is an upcoming variant of the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Introduced in 2018, the 2019 Blazer is a midsize crossover that revived the iconic nameplate after a 13-year absence and slots between the Equinox and the Traverse in the lineup. The Blazer XL is essentially a longer version of the standard SUV. Spotted testing with heavy camouflage on its body, the Blazer XL will likely debut in 2020.

Word has it that the longer Blazer was developed mainly for the Chinese market, where customers favor vehicles with longer wheelbases. But since the prototype was spotted in Germany, the Blazer XL might make it to Europe as well. South America is yet another growing market that will see the Blazer XL debut in 2020. Although this SUV is scheduled to cross the pond to the United States as well, the fact that it’s going to be built in China might be an issue for Chevy due to America’s import tariffs on Chinese products.

The Camaro of midsize crossovers...kind of

Think about what makes a Chevy Camaro different from other cars. Its engines are powerful and its suspension is beautifully composed. Its headlights and windows are sinister little slits. You spin its big dashboard vents to adjust the climate control.

The new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer transfers some of that Camaro magic into the midsize crossover class. The exterior design certainly evokes that sporty coupe rather than the Blazer’s heritage as a hardy off-road machine. And inside, sure enough, you spin the big dashboard vents to adjust the climate control. Even the driving experience is a little bit special, with nimbler handling than the midsize crossover norm and a powerful 308-horsepower V6 engine. With the Blazer, though, fun is relative. This is basically a shortened Chevrolet Traverse, not a tall Camaro. On the other hand, the Blazer’s styling sacrifices less functionality than the Camaro’s. Even if it’s less roomy and has worse visibility than most midsize crossovers, it’s still a midsize crossover — and not even one of those dubious “coupe” models that the Germans keep cranking out.

We’ve probably all heard critics grouse and grouse about the Blazer being reborn as a crossover, rather than returning to its roots as a traditional SUV. (Chevrolet discontinued the old pickup-truck-based Blazer in 2005.) But whatever it’s called, the new Blazer fills an obvious hole in the Chevy crossover lineup - between the compact Equinox and the full-size Traverse. It’s priced from $29,995 to $50k-plus and faces competitors that include the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan Murano. While the Blazer’s relatively tight cargo space and fast-rising prices make it a tough sell on paper, it’s not without merit once you get to know it. According to GM Authority, Chevy is planning to launch the Blazer XL in China in 2020 and later on in other international markets that may include South Korea, Brazil, and a good majority of countries in South Africa as well. The main things that will separate the Blazer XL from the standard Blazer include a flatter roof, larger rear doors, and a larger third window on the side. The tailgate will also be more upright to help conserve a few extra cubic-inches of storage space after that third row of seats is in place.

2018 K5 Chevy Blazer Restomod by Ringbrothers

Ringbrothers is a company “with an affinity for muscle cars,” as they say on the official website, which usually specializes in low, ground-hugging vehicles designed to go around corners very well. At this year’s edition of the SEMA show, however, they brought out their first off-roader, a tastefully restomodded Chevy K5 Blazer, based on the full-size model built from the early 1970s to the early 1990s; the Blazer they used is from 1971, and boy did they deliver...

The company sells many components they make themselves, and it seems this modded K5 got as many of them as they could fit on it. What resulted is probably one of the best looking modded off-roaders I’ve ever seen, which blends decent off-road capability with a head-turning look, strong performance courtesy of an LS3 swap, and some modern gadgets too.

If this is the Ringbrothers’ idea of an off-roader, then we ask them to make more of these, or start selling them as scale models, because I want one to put on my office desk.

It has the chops to take on the big boys

When you think about it, Chevrolet is a producer of cheap, mass-produced cars. Its cars aren’t exactly something we’d call premium, however, some names under the Chevrolet umbrella definitely have that premium feel to them - most notably the Camaro and the Corvette. Have you ever witness someone comparing these two with the likes of BMW M cars or even Ferrari cars (in the case of the ZR1, for example). I am sure you have.

So, yes, these are Chevrolet’s halo cars- those which can, unlike the Trax or the Cruze, compare outside their imaginable segments. What if Chevy plans to do the same with the Blazer? To transform it from a classic cheap crossover to something one may even consider comparable to certain premium cars. The Blazer definitely has the right name and, probably, the right looks on top of that.

In this article, I will explore five ways the Blazer could compete outside its class. Maybe with cars such as the Jaguar F-Pace, the Infiniti QX50, or the Acura RDX. These are all five-seat, luxury, midsize crossovers, just like the Chevy Blazer. So, for the sake of this article, let’s forget about its true competitors - the Ford Edge, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Nissan Murano, and the Subaru Outback.

It is time we faced the truth. There’s so much that could happen but there’s no telling what will happen

In the world of today where SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne or the Alfa Romeo Stelvio act more like sports cars than utility vehicles, we Americans have to keep up. Not that the Blazer name is entirely dissociated from that kind of thing. Looking back in past, we have the Blazer Xtreme Sport or the Blazer ZR2. One of these was a sporty version, while the other a rather interesting, off-road-focused machine. Can Chevrolet bring any of these back?

The iconic SUV returns after 13 years!

Introduced in 1969, the Chevrolet Blazer survived in many forms until 2005, when the iconic nameplate was retired for good. Come 2018, and Chevy finally revived the name for a new midsize crossover. This time around, the Blazer rides on a unibody platform and boasts a sporty, modern design based on the Camaro sports car.

It may have sounded ludicrous a few years ago, but the Blazer is no longer the boxy SUV that dominated the market back in the day. Instead of rolling yet another conventional crossover that would cannibalize the Traverse, Chevy designed the new Blazer with younger customers in mind and looked at the Camaro muscle car for inspiration. The new Blazer comes to take on the Ford Edge and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it looks like Chevy’s Detroit rivals have plenty to worry about.

Of course, we have known for quite some time now that the new Blazer won’t be a rugged, off-road eager machine with two doors. Our friends over at Truck Trend say Chevrolet is preparing a mid-size, two-row crossover to compete against the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano for the 2019 model year. What will Chevy call it? Industry rumors say Blazer. Adding fuel to the (dumpster) fire are spy photos of such a vehicle trolling around public roads while covered in heavy camouflage. Naturally, the news comes as a huge disappointment – not because Chevy is developing a new crossover, but because it will carry the iconic Blazer name.

The resurrection of bygone vehicle names is in heavy swing these days. Ford is bringing back the Ranger pickup to the U.S. and dusting off the Bronco name for the first time since the mid-1990s. It’s almost common knowledge Ford’s upcoming Bronco will be based on the T6 Ranger pickup platform and use a ladder frame and a solid rear axle. It’s expected to offer an excellent compromise between on-road civility and off-road capability while honoring its nameplate that traces its roots to the 1960s when Ford needed an SUV to compete with the Jeep CJ. Yet here we are, with Chevy about to slap the equally iconic Blazer name onto an assumably forgettable family hauler that couldn’t wheel its way over a parking stop. Why, Chevy? Of course, we should take these rumors with a huge grain of salt. No sources were listed and not even the vehicle in the spy photos show any discernable Chevy characteristics. Still, it’s hard not to criticize GM for not directly competing against the Bronco with a Colorado-based SUV wearing a Blazer badge. Chevy already has such an SUV in markets around the world. It’s even called the Trailblazer. Why not fight Ford at its own game? After all, SUV and pickup sales are booming thanks to cheap fuel and a growing economy.

Could Chevy Bring Back the Blazer?

It appears Chevrolet is preparing a mid-size crossover based on General Motors’ new C1XX, or “Chi” platform. Spy shots of the vehicles were recently captured, pouring fuel on rumors of the Blazer nameplate returning to Chevy’s lineup. Could we really see a Chevy Blazer and Ford Bronco matchup by the decade’s end?

The photos come by way of Automotive News, whose photographer caught a test mule roaming the streets of Michigan. The three-row crossover will be a corporate cousin to the new 2017 GMC Acadia and slot between the upcoming 2018 Chevy Equinox and full-size Traverse.

This would give Chevy a huge boost in crossover offerings, allowing it to strongly compete in the exploding crossover and SUV market. With the Blazer in place, Chevy would have six vehicles in the category. The upcoming Blazer also answers questions on why Chevrolet decided to downsize the Equinox for 2018.

As for the test mule itself, it clearly shares its platform with the Acadia. This is most evident in the lower portion of the body, with the fuel tank skid plate hanging below the unibody chassis, the area between the rear door and wheel well, and the rear lower rear bumper area. Each is all nearly identical to the 2017 Acadia.

As for its Chevy trimmings, the grille features horizontal chrome slats like the Traverse, the LED headlights look similar to the 2018 Equinox, and the rear tailgate has chrome trim just above the license plate. Dual exhaust tips give the crossover a sporty flair.

The Blazer is expected to debut sometime in 2017, perhaps at the Detroit Auto Show, ahead of its 2018 release. And like its size, Its price will slot between the Equinox and the Traverse.

An in-depth comparison between the Chevy Blazer and Ford Bronco

Ah, the second-generation Chevrolet Blazer – a masculine truck with big power, 4WD capability, and looks to stun. The truck was introduced for the 1973 model year and lasted through the 1991 season, but for 1981, the SUV received a new front grille and several updates throughout. Chevy put together this fantastic training video for its dealerships to educate sales staff on the changes. Thanks to the magic of the internet, the awesomely retro video is available to anyone to watch.

The 10-minute video goes over four key areas of improvement for the 1981 Blazer: economy, mobility, utility, and value. Telling sales staff about these changes is great, but demonstrating is even better. That’s exactly what the video does – while pitting the Blazer against its arch rival, the Ford Bronco.

Of course, the Chevy-made video points out all the positives of the Blazer and “week points” of the Bronco, so it’s best to watch with a grain of salt. This is hardly objective reporting. Then again, it’s hard to argue with the Blazer’s better fuel economy numbers with each of its engine options, including the venerable 5.0-liter, 305 cubic-inch small-block V-8.

Regardless of the verbal messages within the video, watching these now-classic SUVs scramble up a dirt hill, trudge through loose sand, and sit pretty with unmolested interiors and factory-fresh paint is fantastic. There’s no doubt these trucks are on their way to becoming collectables with increasing value and desirability.
