When Chevrolet introduced the C7-generation Corvette in 2013, the following SEMA Show was packed with Corvette-based concepts that previewed a range of accessories developed specifically for the front-engined sports car. With a brand-new Camaro launched in 2015, history is about to repeat itself as Chevy plans to bring a full lineup of customized Camaros at this year’s event.

The sixth-gen Camaro is already a highly customizable muscle car thanks to Chevrolet’s Performance Parts and Accessories catalog, but the brand wants to take things up a notch. We’ve already seen the Red Line Series package and its black-and-red graphics, but Chevy also prepared a Black Accent package that gives the SS version "a decidedly more ’tuner’ aesthetic."

There’s no word as to when the Black Accent package will become available through dealerships, but Chevrolet is expected to accept orders for the bundle during the 2016 model year.

At the 2015 SEMA Show, the Camaro SS Black Accent will join the Camaro Red Line Series, the Camaro SS Red Accent, and more than 20 other Chevrolets with production and concept accessories and performance parts.

As with most factory-built SEMA concepts, the Camaro SS Black Accent isn’t too flashy, but has plenty of features to make it stand out in a pack of standard SS models. Finished in Red Hot, a color that can be had on any sixth-gen Camaro, the concept features a black-painted ground effects package that includes a front splitter, beefier side skirts, and a sportier rear apron.

The concept features a black-painted ground effects package that includes a front splitter, beefier side skirts, and a sportier rear apron.

The strong contrast between the red paint and the black elements is further enhanced by the tinted taillights, the Satin Black rally stripes on the engine hood and trunk lid, the black bowtie emblems, and the Low Gloss Black 20-inch, five-spoke wheels. Finally, the SS Black Accent also features a black-painted fuel door cover and benefits from a lowered ride height thanks to the Performance suspension kit.

The good news here is that everything but the black fuel cap is already available via Chevrolet Accessories, meaning you can buy a similar Camaro SS without having to wait for the Black Accent package to go on sale.

Interior

Much like the Camaro Red Line Series concept, the Black Accent concept doesn’t have many new interior features to brag about. The cabin is trimmed in standard Jet Black leather you can order on any Camaro, but personalized with black trim and knee pads, a suede console lid with the Chevrolet Performance logo and red stitching, sport pedal covers, and SS-branded premium floor mats.

Granted, black interiors are a good choice if you’re looking for a more sober ambiance, but a pony car such as the Camaro SS deserves a sportier cockpit. That’s why I think that an Adrenaline Red interior with red seating surfaces and door panes inserts, and with red knee pads instead of black one would be a better choice given the Red Hot exterior. All told, the Black Accent package might not be you’re best choice for a lively, sporty interior.

Drivetrain

The Black Accent concept gets its juice from the Camaro SS’ all-new 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Based off the Corvette’s LT1, the powerplant has cast aluminum block and cylinder heads, direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. The engine shares most of its parts with the Corvette’s, with only 20 percent being unique to the Camaro.

The only things that are different here are the red accented engine cover and the performance air intake

Output has been enhanced significantly for the sixth-gen SS, which benefits from 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of twist, a 29-horsepower and 35-pound-feet improvement over the previous model. The new SS is also 20-horsepower more powerful than the Mustang GT. Hitting 60 mph from a standing start takes 4.3 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission and four seconds flat with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The only things that are different here are the red accented engine cover and the performance air intake, both of which are already available via Chevrolet Performance Parts and Accessories.

Finally, the concept features six-piston Brembo brakes up front and red calipers at all four corners. Because the muscle car is equipped with the Performance Parts suspension lowering kit, it doesn’t have Magnetic Ride Control.

Conclusion

With most of its added parts already available from Chevrolet’s Performance and Accessories division, the Camaro SS Black Accent is not a concept car in the true sense. That’s not to say it’s not a cool car to look at, but it’s funny that the only conceptual thing about it is a black-painted fuel door cover. All told, the Black Accent concept is the perfect vehicle to make customers want to spend an extra buck on bespoke features. At the same time, it allows potential buyers to explore the new Camaro and its design-enhancing options.

  • Leave it

    • * Suspension lowering kit won’t let you have Magnetic Ride Control
    • * Not exactly a concept car

The performance suspension lowering kit and Brembo front brake package – with red calipers – completes the street-smart stance of the Camaro. Under the hood is the new performance air intake and a red accented engine cover.

The Jet Black leather-trimmed interior is personalized with black interior trim and knee pads, SS-logo premium carpeted floor mats, a suede console lid with the Chevrolet Performance logo and red stitching, and sport pedal covers.

The Red Accent and Black Accent Camaro SS concepts will be displayed at the 2015 SEMA Show, in Las Vegas, along with more than 20 Chevrolet vehicles with production and concept accessories and performance parts.
