With the SEMA Auto Show kicking off next week in Las Vegas, Chevy has been busy building concepts to show off various accessory packages. So far, we’ve seen the Redline Series Concepts that included the Malibu, Trax, Silverado, Colorado, and Camaro. All of which included special paint, custom emblems and nameplates, and some red accenting. Now, with the 2016 Chevy Camaro’s release day just around the corner, Chevrolet has taken things a step further with the Chevy Camaro SS Red Accent Package.

The Red Accent Package concept is based on the convertible variant of the SS and has some unique, but subtle accents and modifications. While the body modifications are quite similar to that of the 2016 Camaro Redline Series Concept, the package also adds some interior styling and some minor performance upgrades that place it a bit higher on the totem pole.

While there may be more to come when we see the concept at SEMA, read on to see our preliminary review of this new concept.

Exterior

To start off, Chevy painted the exterior in Switchblade Silver Metallic paint and added the same hash mark graphic from Redline Series Concept, only this time it is red in color. The lower air dam has been swapped out for one with a stretched out honeycomb appearance and red accents on the lower corners.

The rear end appears to be virtually unchanged, however, but the car is fitted with Chevy’s Concept Black Bowtie Emblems. The concept rides on 20-inch, 5-spoke Gloss Black wheels that have a red outline stripe that looks much better than the custom wheels we saw on the Redline Series Concept. You’ll also notice those wheels seem to fill the wheel wells a little better too, thanks to the Concept Suspension Kit that lowers the car’s stance by what appears to be about a half inch or so. Behind the front wheels, Chevy has fitted the Concept with Brembo six-piston calipers that are painted red.

Interior

Inside, there is an enormous change over what we saw on the Redline Series Concept. In addition to the standard features included with the SS trim, the knee bolsters on each side are red, and the doors also have red inserts. The floor carpet is protected by premium SS-logo floor mats, and it has been fitted with premium sport pedal covers. Adrenaline Red leather trim accents the seats, and an interior illumination kit has been installed. To top it all off, the center console lid also sports the SS logo.

Drivetrain

It is safe to assume that the Red Accent Package received the same 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 that comes standard in the SS, but it has been fitted with an air intake kit that should add a little extra to the 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque it produces. To make the engine bay look a little better, the engine cover has been swapped for a special red-accented engine cover. Chevy didn’t mention any other engine mods, but some custom tuning and a performance exhaust isn’t out of the question. It would be nice to see anyway.

Conclusion

I think Chevy did a decent job with this concept as far as accenting goes, but I still expected to see a little more red in the mix. Perhaps a red pinstripe or red inserts around the exhaust pipes at the rear. I think a small red outline around the black bowtie would have really set things off too. I expected to see a little more of a body graphic, instead of the same graphic we saw on the Redline Series.

I was happy to see that they finally took a stab at the interior on this concept, instead of leaving it unchanged as we’ve seen on the other recent concepts. In the end, I think it is a nice package and I’m excited to see it more in detail when the concept actually debuts. There is no doubt in my mind that at least some of the concept accessories shown on this model will eventually make it to the options list on the official order form.

  • Leave it
    • Not enough red accenting on the exterior
    • Only one engine mod
    • Very little modification to the rear of the vehicle
