The Chevrolet Corvette has a long history with racing, and the latest C7.R racecar has definitely been carrying the torch since its introduction last year. To celebrate the early success that the C7 has already had in racing, Chevrolet has introduced the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition.

First the bad news. This car is little more than a styling package tacked onto the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. So where’s the good news, you ask? That lies in the fact that the C7 Z06 is already enough of a track superstar that all it took to create the Z06 C7.R Edition was a special paint job and all the performance goodies the C7 Z06 offers.

Unlike the racecar used by Corvette Racing teams, the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition will be offered as either a coupe or convertible.

Updated 09/28/2015: The very first Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition was sold at the 8th Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction for the amazing amount of $500,000. All the proceeds will go to Detroit-based College for Creative Studies.

Exterior

Painted to match Corvette Racing’s yellow-and-black livery, the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition looks as much as the race car as the DOT probably allows. Tone down the aero (lose the massive splitters and rear wing) and ditch the sponsor stickers, and the C7.R quickly becomes the Z06 C7.R Edition. From there, Chevy adds unique touches such as the black wheels with yellow accents and Corvette racing logos, exposed carbon fiber for the ground effects and the hood, yellow brake calipers and special C7.R Edition body graphics.

That bright yellow paint job seen above is actually a new hue for 2016 (Corvette Racing Yellow Tricoat), but if yellow isn’t quite your thing, the Z06 C7.R Edition is available in black, too. And to keep the limited-edition car protected from weather and, more likely, dust, the Z06 C7.R Edition also comes with a matching car cover.

Interior

Unlike the bare-bones cabin of the C7.R race car, the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition is fully decked out with all of the luxury expected from a C7 Corvette. Carrying over the yellow-and-black color scheme, the Z06 C7.R Edition features a blacked-out interior with yellow accent stitching throughout. There is plenty of exposed carbon fiber trim inside this car as well as suede microfiber on the Competition Sport Seats, instrument panel, steering wheel and shifter. Finishing off the interior are door sill plates that feature the Corvette Racing logo.

Drivetrain

There are no changes made to the drivetrain of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition, which leaves the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 with its 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. To maximize its on-track performance, though, the Z06 C7.R Edition does come standard with the Z06’s optional Z07 Performance Package that adds Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and Michelin PS Cup 2 tires.

Prices

Chevrolet has not announced pricing for the Z06 C7.R Edition, but as a jumping point, the current 2015 Z06 3LZ coupe and convertible with the Z07 Performance Package start at $101,630 and $105,630, respectively. Factor in a limited run of just 500 units, and there’s no doubt this future collectors’ car will command a pretty penny from Chevrolet dealerships.

Competition

If there’s any other car the Z06 C7 has to worry about fighting on the track as well as the streets, it’s the Porsche 911 GT3. It might be hard to accept this logic considering the 911 GT3 is rated at just 475 horsepower, but when it comes to carving up corners, there is no better weapon for the job… well, maybe except the upcoming 2016 911 GT3 RS. In its base form, the 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 will cost $130,400, which could be about where the Z06 C7.R Edition is priced.

2015 Dodge Viper

The 2015 Dodge Viper is another contender the C7 Z06 has to worry about both on and off the track. The Viper’s raucous 8.4-liter V-10 lays down about the same power output as the Z06 (645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque), but one advantage the Viper has over this Z06 C7.R Edition is that buyers can opt for the highly customizable GTC trim level, which can bring an equally cool look and even more rarity. Dodge promises only one of each of the 25 million build combinations will be allowed, for what should be less money. The 2015 Dodge Viper GTC starts at $94,995, but Dodge has not said how much the custom touches will cost.

The 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition is going to be a big hit with Corvette and Corvette Racing enthusiasts. This limited-edition ‘Vette is as close as you can get to a street-legal version of the C7.R race car, while keeping the same mean look. Sadly, with the production capped at just 500 units, the chances of seeing a C7.R Edition driving around are about as good as seeing the actual C7.R out on the streets.
