With the 2021 model year, the Tahoe received a generational upgrade that included the addition of a few more trims and various improvements inside and out. For the upcoming 2022 model year, Chevrolet has updated the already well-equipped Tahoe with newer colors, advanced features, and some other goodies. The 2022 Tahoe competes with the likes of the 2022 Ford Expedition (starting MSRP: $53,000 est.) and the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer (starting MSRP: $59,995). With an expected starting price of around $52,000, is this the full-size SUV the one you should consider? Let’s dig deeper.

The Tahoe has been one of the best-selling SUVs wearing a bowtie. Yes, it is in its fifth generation, which was introduced recently in 2021. The complete makeover has been one of its key selling points. It is underpinned by GM’s GMT1UC platform, which is one of the many derivatives of the GMT1XX platform that GM introduced in 2019 with the Silverado and Silverado HD as well as the GMC Sierra and Sierra HD. Thanks to this large, full-frame platform, the Tahoe has an impressive amount of interior space with a lot of headroom and legroom. What’s rare is being a full-frame vehicle, something the Tahoe is along with the GMC Yukon. For the 2022 model year, Chevrolet has added a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel standard for all trims except the base LS trim, which instead comes with an 8.0-inch panel. Auburn, Dark Ash, and Evergreen Gray color schemes are added to the collection for a more exotic and diverse look. The company made available the bigger 6.2-liter V-8 engine to the RST, Z71, and Premier trim levels, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential has been added to the Z71 trim - the Tahoe’s off-road capable variant. The standard driver assistance features get its bag full with the addition of front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, and the proprietary Buckle to Drive feature from GM. The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV with a hauling capacity of up to 8 people and it will give you a supple and quiet ride, even at highway speeds.

When the fifth-generation Tahoe launched in 2020, it brought with it a few new trims to give the lineup a fresh start. The upcoming 2022 model year would have the same set of trims, six to be precise: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and the range-topping High Country. All the trims get a standard 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8 except for the High Country which comes equipped with a bigger 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8. The latter engine is made available as an optional extra, and so is the 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine. RWD comes as standard with a rear limited-slip differential. AWD is offered at an additional $3,000 with automatic locking hubs, on-demand 4WD, and a lot more. A detailed trim list and features are just below:

Among all six trims, the LT seems like a perfect value with almost all the important updates for the 2022 model year. Leather upholstery along with heated front seats, the new 12.3-inch driver information display, and a few features make it look fully packed. However, opting for the 6.2-liter V-8 would be better as long as you don’t mind taking a small hit to fuel economy.

The latest generation Tahoe is indeed a real champ in terms of the overall looks. We won’t term it as sporty, but the RST trim with the red color scheme does look pretty sporty. Like the earlier Tahoes, the front gets a massive intake grille with horizontal lines running across it. The new DRLs and the sleek LED headlights give the fifth-gen Tahoe a modern look. The lower part of the front fascia gets a skid plate if you happen to opt for the off-road biased Z71 trim. Coming to the sides, you will witness the 18-inch alloys but you can upgrade them to the massive 22-inch ones. The rear has old-school halogen lights mainly and LEDs for brake lights. It seems that Chevrolet has not done a lot of work to the rear and that is fine considering it is an SUV.

Compared to the previous generation, the new Tahoe is longer and slightly wider. A set of 18-inch alloy wheels come fitted as standard but the 22-inch ones are available as an option.

The overall exterior design is appealing and for the 2022 model year, there are no updates as such. The Tahoe is an eight-seater full-size SUV, so the dimensions are understandably huge. Even the curb weight, 5,473 pounds with the base trim, will prove how a full-size SUV behaves. Anyway, the wheelbase is 120.9 inches long which is up by 4 inches from the earlier generation. The massive 210.7-inch length of the SUV with increased height and weight make it look and feel bigger than the fourth-generation Tahoe. The ground clearance is set to be around 8 inches with the standard coil springs which are decent for an SUV and with the adaptive dampening it can go up to a massive 10 inches.

Interior: Better Build And Even More Spacious

The Tahoe was spacious for an eight-seater, but with the 2021 model year, Chevrolet has squeezed out a little more space in the third row - by ten inches to be exact - which has led to increased legroom. For the 2022 model year, the cabin has hardly changed with a similar layout and design language since its complete makeover. However, the most noticeable and only change would be the new 12.3-inch fully customizable driver information display, which can be had on all models except base trim. The dashboard has a combination of hard and soft plastics along with silver-colored rails around the infotainment screen. The overall cabin build is so much better than the earlier generation, although the design is not the most attractive for an SUV, it is indeed a small step above. The leather-wrapped chunky steering wheel has all the control buttons for the new digital instrument console along with the infotainment system. Other interior features include:

The seating and comfort inside the cabin is something you shouldn’t be worried about because Chevrolet has you covered with seven or eight and even nine seats, which is an optional extra, by the way. But let us tell you that opting for a full-size SUV is better any day because of its practicality and unmatched comfort and style. The Tahoe’s cabin is much quieter than it has been in previous years. The seats come with premium cloth upholstery as standard but as you climb up the trim tree, it gets upgraded to leather upholstery, which is not only superior in quality but also in comfort. So, the first two rows have always been spacious and comforting to passengers of all sizes but the noticeable improvement in seating comfort in the third row is much more than we thought.

A massive increase in ten inches of legroom to 36.7 inches makes the cabin more practical for hauling a family of up to eight people without much hassle.

Chevrolet did tick the right points in overall practicality, including a cargo-room increase of 66-percent to 25.5 cubic-feet. The Tahoe’s infotainment system is fluid and user intuitive. The base LS trim packs an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, while all other trims feature the larger 10.2-inch display. The usual Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity come loaded along with Bluetooth, WiFi hotspot, and a six-speaker audio system as standard. Opting for the higher trims will give access to a premium Bose sound system along with a wireless charging pad and a lot more. Performance and Handling: Old-school But Tempting

It is not particularly sad that the powertrain options remain unchanged, as the fifth-gen launched with new looks and improved performance. However, there is a new diesel engine for 2022. That said, the same old naturally aspirated 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s are fitted as standard according to the trim you wish for. The 5.3-liter engine pumps out 355 horses and 383 pound-feet, drives through the rear wheels as standard, and shifts gears briskly through a 10-speed automatic unit. The latter 6.2-liter engine is equipped with only the High Country trim as standard and as an option on other trims. It belts out 420 horses and 460 pound-feet, drives through the rear wheels, and is mated to the same 10-speed transmission. There is an optional AWD at the cost of $3,000 which will come with on-demand 4WD, and automatic locking hubs. There is a new 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine introduced with the 2021 model year that puts out 277 horses but a whopping 460 pound-feet of torque. While the torque figures are similar to the 6.2-liter engine, it kicks in earlier in the rev range, making it fly past in overtaking.

In terms of acceleration, the 5.3-liter engine does 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds and the 6.2-liter engine makes the same sprint in 5.9 seconds. The turbodiesel engine acceleration timings are not available, but we expect that the results will be similar to the base engine. In the real world, SUVs are heavy, and so is the Tahoe. So the performance will not be breathtaking with the base engine but is enough for cruising along the highways. If your budget allows you to get the 6.2-liter engine then the missing parts can be filled. Other than that, the turbo-diesel with its 460 pound-feet will not upset you either while returning better fuel economy. Side-by-side the Ford Expedition with its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 makes a considerably higher engine power will perform better in real-world performance.

Compared to the earlier generation, the new Tahoe is better at handling and rides smoothly. The independent rear suspension and the longer wheelbase have almost eliminated the bouncy nature which had been quite troublesome with previous generations of the Tahoe. The 2022 model year will have the same impressions since there is no major difference in the suspension. The Sportier RST trim gets a Premium Smooth Ride Suspension as named by Chevrolet, which even smoothens the ride over rough roads but nothing comes close to the optional Air Ride Adaptive Suspension system along with the Magnetic Ride Control. As for the steering capabilities, the feedback is not great, to be honest, and that is not something a big vehicle like the Tahoe is supposed to be bringing. A rear-slip differential comes fitted as standard with all the trims enhancing traction on the road. The on-demand 4WD and automatic locking hubs are available with the optional AWD.

It may seem that both the V-8s are gas guzzlers but the cylinder-deactivation tech does a decent job. However, the turbocharged diesel engine is the best in the lot with 21 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles on the highways. Whereas the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s return 16 and 15 miles per gallon in the city, respectively, and similar highway mileage of 20 miles per gallon. The maximum range you can gather from the V-8s is around 480 miles and the turbodiesel straight-six with an astounding 672 miles. Folks who are not ready to bear fuel expenses frequently can opt for the diesel engine variant of the 2022 Tahoe.

While the IIHS doesn’t hold any reviews on the safety of the Tahoe, the NHTSA does put up an above-average 4-star rating in the overall crash resistance. Not something we expected when the competition like the Ford Expedition scored five out of five by the agency. Although for the 2022 model year, the standard driver assistance features are getting bumped up with the addition of lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, and front and rear parking sensors. Halogen taillights do not look outlandish on this SUV but there are LED brake lights and the dual exhaust tips on the right looks kinda sporty.

The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe will be a great SUV since the inclusion of a few features that were absent now can make a comeback in the competition. It is cheaper than the Ford Expedition and the GMC Yukon, the latter of which shares the same platform, engine, and powertrain as the Tahoe. But there is a gap of about $2,000 between the Tahoe and latter SUVs. We feel that opting for the Ford Expedition would be great because of the powerful twin-turbo V-6 and more spacious third-row. We are not portraying that the Chevrolet Tahoe is not a good option, but the Expedition serves a better value and combination of practicality and performance.

Expanded 6.2L V-8 engine availability and new eLSD option
For customers looking for power, the popular 6.2L V-8 engine rated at 420-horsepower is now available on the RST, Z71 and Premier. The 6.2L engine is standard on the High Country. This engine comes with dual exhaust and features Dynamic Fuel Management technology, designed to optimize engine efficiency across a broad range of driving conditions, including when towing a trailer. When the RST is ordered with the 6.2L V-8, customers also gain Magnetic Ride Control, one of the fastest-reacting damping systems in the industry. Magnetic Ride Control is standard on Premier and High Country and available on Z71.

The 5.3L V-8 remains the standard engine on LS, LT, Z71, RST and Premier models. The optional Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel is available on all models except Z71. All engines are mated to a standard 10-speed automatic transmission with push-button electronic shift.

New for 2022, the available electronic limited slip differential draws on sports car DNA to deliver improved driving performance in a full-size SUV. If wheel slip is detected on either side of the vehicle, eLSD reacts quickly to shift power to the wheel with better traction. That additional traction can contribute to increased driver confidence in difficult types of terrain and weather conditions. Available on the off-road focused Z71 trim, eLSD also can be used in 4WD Low to help prevent wheelslip in dirt and mud.

Enhanced trailering technology and larger driver information cluster
For 2022, Tahoe and Suburban will now offer up to 13 available, unique camera views1, including a transparent trailer view that helps the driver virtually “see through” a connected, compatible trailer when the truck is properly equipped. Additional new trailering views include a rear trailer view, a picture-in-picture side view, and a view inside a trailer when an accessory camera is connected.

A new, larger 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster is now standard on 2022 Tahoe and Suburban for LT trims and above. With four user-selectable layouts, this cluster allows drivers to (customize or personalize) display information in the way most comfortable for them during short trips or a long family adventure.

Seamless infotainment system with Google built-in compatibility

Today’s modern drivers increasingly expect seamless integration between their personal tech and vehicles. With Google built-in,2 standard on trims LT and above, drivers will have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play right on the vehicle display. This new experience works with Android AutoTM3 and Apple CarPlay4 capability and offers new levels of customization and flexibility for customers.

Rather than connect a smartphone and project onto the center screen, select Google apps and services are integrated into the vehicle’s hardwire. Users have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and in-vehicle applications on Google Play. The integration will continue to evolve over time, but 2022 Tahoe and Suburban customers will be able to control vehicle functions by voice or the steering wheel, including:

Phone calls and messaging (SMS), when phone paired
Audio volume
Changing AM/FM radio or SiriusXM channel (subscription required5)

Additional standard active safety features6 and color choices

Safety is an important consideration for many Tahoe and Suburban customers.

The 2022 models have two active safety features now standard across all trims: Front and Rear Park Assist and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning uses a brief, gentle steering wheel turn to alert you when you may be unintentionally drifting out of detected lane lines. It is part of a suite of six standard active safety features called Chevy Safety Assist on every trim for the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban. In addition to Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Chevy Safety Assist also includes:

Buckle to Drive will be a standard feature on the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban to help remind drivers to buckle up before driving. The feature does not allow a shift out of park until the driver and front passenger, if detected, have their seat belts fastened. Buckling a seat belt is among the top ways drivers can protect themselves in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Additionally, Tahoe and Suburban also will offer new exterior colors: Evergreen Gray Metallic, Auburn Metallic and Dark Ash Metallic.

The 2022 Tahoe and Suburban will begin production in October.
